Interview | Hope to use China's experience to promote technology to better benefit people's livelihoods - Interview with Malaysian Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Zheng Likang
2026-05-08
Malaysia's Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Cheng Likang, recently visited China. Despite having visited China multiple times, he still summarized his trip as "eye opening". When receiving an exclusive interview with a reporter from Xinhua News Agency, Zheng Likang said: "We hope to use China's experience in science and technology development to promote Malaysia's science and technology to better benefit people's livelihood." Not long ago, Zheng Likang led a delegation to visit Xiamen and Yinchuan, China, and attended the sixth "the Belt and Road" China Malaysia industrial and commercial dialogue. From the southeast coast to the northwest inland, different development scenarios interweave and present, giving him a more intuitive understanding of China's technological development and application. I thought Ningxia would be more desolate, but what I actually saw was a different scene. ”Zheng Likang said that the local area did not blindly pursue high-rise buildings, but developed modern agriculture, coal chemical industry, and wine industry based on its own resource endowment. This development model of "adapting to local conditions and guiding according to the situation" left a deep impression on him. Every place has its own development path, which has inspired me a lot, "Zheng Likang specifically mentioned the drone technology investigated during this trip. He said, "There are already some applications of drones in modern agriculture and other fields in Malaysia, but many areas have not yet been used. For example, in logistics transportation and weather modification, I really hope we can apply them as soon as possible. In this regard, there is a lot of room for cooperation between Malaysia and China. 2026 is the starting year of China's 15th Five Year Plan and Malaysia's 13th Malaysia Plan. Zheng Likang stated that Malaysia's future technology focus on advanced materials, hydrogen energy, biotechnology, space technology, and other areas is highly compatible with China's advantageous industries, and he sees broader cooperation opportunities between the two countries in the future. The focus of the 13th Malaysia Plan is on how to achieve the transformation of technological achievements. ”Zheng Likang candidly stated that a serious problem currently facing Malaysia is the inability to industrialize many excellent scientific research products, which is a major pain point for us. In his view, China has already taken the lead in technology, especially in translating scientific research achievements into civilian products. "This is exactly where we aspire to cooperate and learn from," he said. In addition to the integration of technology and industry, Zheng Likang also focuses on talent cultivation. Our ultimate goal is to transform from a technology user country to a technology exporter, and talent is the most important 'capital'. He hopes to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation between universities, governments, and enterprises in Malaysia and China, and jointly cultivate talents in key fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and advanced materials. When talking about investment cooperation, Zheng Likang said that Malaysia welcomes Chinese companies to invest and develop in Malaysia, and also looks forward to domestic companies landing in China. He said that although there are differences in the development stages of the two countries, they have strong complementarity and ample room for cooperation. Moreover, Malaysia has a high degree of compatibility with China in terms of culture, language, and lifestyle habits. "Chinese enterprises often achieve smooth docking in Malaysia's development, which provides a good foundation for investment cooperation. Faced with the complex international environment and challenges of technological independence, Zheng Likang stated that Malaysia has gained confidence and reference from China's practice. He said that in the face of some "bottleneck" situations, China actively promotes scientific research and innovation, encourages independent research and development to address these challenges and achieve significant results. "This is very worth learning from". (Looking into the New Era)
