China University of Science and Technology realizes high-speed practical quantum key distribution

2026-05-08

The reporter recently learned from the University of Science and Technology of China that the team led by Academician Guo Guangcan has made significant progress in practical quantum key distribution research. The team has overcome the limitations of quantum state preparation and single photon detection technology in terms of high speed, high signal-to-noise ratio, and integration. For the first time, a semiconductor single photon detector has been used to achieve a secure key rate record that surpasses superconducting detection systems. Quantum key distribution is one of the key technologies in quantum secure communication. How to achieve higher key rates while ensuring security, while also considering the convenience of device deployment, has become an important issue in this field. In recent years, relying on high-performance superconducting detection systems, the secure key rate of quantum key distribution has been continuously improved. However, such systems usually require complex low-temperature cooling conditions, high equipment costs, and difficult deployment, which limits their further large-scale applications. The breakthrough of this research lies in the team's use of an integrated quantum state preparation scheme and semiconductor single photon detection technology to achieve high key rates and stable operation without relying on complex conditions such as low-temperature cooling.
