The trend of "Sinicization": new sparks of interaction, integration, and collision between Chinese and foreign youth

Get up in the morning with a cup of hot water, cook porridge and soup for health care in leisure time, and practice Baduanjin for physical fitness... Many foreign young people use short videos to record their "Chinese lifestyle", and a wave of "sinicization" is quietly warming up. Nowadays, this imitative curiosity is escalating into face-to-face deep interaction. More and more young foreigners are coming to China, colliding with new sparks of cultural integration in real scenes. During this year's May Day holiday, young people from around the world gathered at the Tianjin Bubble Island Music Festival to enjoy the youthful vitality of the festival. Music has become the most direct "universal language" across borders and a natural gateway for cultural exchange between China and foreign countries. The independent band 'English Teacher' from Leeds, UK, is composed of a group of young people and is performing in China for the first time. It's particularly cool to see Chinese audiences outside of Europe genuinely interested in our music, "said lead singer and guitarist Lily Fontaine. In her view, the openness and tolerance of Chinese audiences towards international music is a vivid reflection of the accelerating global cultural flow. This is enough to illustrate that the connections between different cultures are becoming increasingly close. We are very much looking forward to seeing what Chinese musicians are creating, which will be the direction we most want to explore in depth when we come to China next time. From outdoor stages to professional theaters, the interactive field between Chinese and foreign youth continues to extend. Recently, at the Tianjin Grand Theatre, the Brazilian Bahia Youth Orchestra made their debut in Tianjin. Isaac Bispo, the 21-year-old lead violinist of the orchestra, said, 'Our tour in different cities in China was an important artistic experience.' What impressed him even more was the communication outside of the performance. In Xi'an, we interact face-to-face with local university students. They play Brazilian music, and we play works by Chinese composers. This process of sharing and learning from each other is very meaningful. He also saw for the first time a Chinese instrument similar to a violin - the erhu. I have never seen it before, which makes me curious, "Bispo said. In the future, he hopes to have the opportunity to further understand and learn this instrument. According to data from the China National Immigration Administration, in the first quarter of this year, the national immigration management agencies have inspected a total of 185 million inbound and outbound personnel, a year-on-year increase of 13.5%. Among them, the number of foreigners reached 21.333 million, a year-on-year increase of 22.3%. The number of visa free foreign visitors reached 8.315 million, a year-on-year increase of 29.3%, accounting for 77.9% of the total number of foreign visitors. More and more foreign youth are measuring China with their footsteps. Wang Wenqian, Dean of the School of European Languages and Culture at Tianjin Foreign Studies University, stated that more and more foreign youth are actively learning Chinese, paying attention to Chinese cultural products, and participating in discussions on Chinese social issues. The interaction between Chinese and foreign youth is shifting from "superficial contact" to "deep integration". In this process, contemporary Chinese youth are also participating in global exchanges with a more confident and open attitude. This kind of deep interaction is particularly evident in long-term institutionalized communication projects. The five-year cooperation between the Russian "Little Eagle" All Russian Children's Center and Tianjin Foreign Studies University is a typical example. As communication deepens, the experience of "Sinicization" has shifted from initial cultural curiosity to more sustained interaction and co creation. Not long ago, 32 members of the Russian "Little Eagle" delegation came to Tianjin to participate in the 2026 China Russia Youth Culture and Art Festival. They not only brought dance and choir performances, but also rehearsed songs and participated in cultural market interactions with Chinese peers. The process of co creation shifts the cultural exchange between both parties from "watching" to "participating", and from "showcasing" to "co building". At the "Cloud Story Club", Chinese students told the story of "The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl" in Russian, while Russian students shared "The Blind Touching the Elephant" in Chinese. Language learning and cultural understanding were simultaneously promoted in the same scene. Among the "Little Eagle" students who have come to China multiple times, many have voluntarily shared their experiences in China after returning home, and some have expressed their willingness to further their studies in China. The transition from "experiencers" to "narrators" and then to potential "participants" reveals a clear trend: when foreign youth truly enter concrete and authentic Chinese life scenes, they are no longer just passively receiving information, but gradually become "folk ambassadors" connecting different cultures. Professor Pang Hua from the School of New Media and Communication at Tianjin University believes that China's achievements in the fields of economy, technology, culture, and people's livelihood are showing young people around the world an "open, inclusive, and vibrant" China. And this is precisely the deepest driving force behind the current trend of 'Sinicization' - Chinese and foreign youth naturally form deep resonance through real interactions, getting closer and understanding each other. ”Pang Hua said.
