China will assume the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month starting from the 1st. Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations Fu Cong introduced at a press conference on the same day that the Security Council will focus on three key areas this month: revitalizing the authority of the United Nations Charter and the role of the United Nations, promoting political solutions to the Middle East issue, and supporting the stable development of African countries. Fu Cong stated that in recent years, the international situation has become increasingly turbulent, conflicts and confrontations have been on the rise, and the multilateral system and international rule of law have been severely impacted. The international community urgently needs to take action to restore the authority of the United Nations Charter and the role of the United Nations, in order to prevent the world from returning to the law of the jungle where the jungle prevails. The Security Council will hold a high-level open debate in May on the theme of "upholding the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and strengthening the international system with the United Nations at its core", aiming to promote countries to revisit the original mission of the United Nations Charter, defend the achievements of World War II, and revitalize the core role of the United Nations in the international system. Fu Cong said that the Security Council will routinely review issues such as Israel, Lebanon, and Syria in May. It is necessary to closely monitor the development of the situation, urge all parties concerned to remain calm and restrained, cease fire and war as soon as possible, resolve disputes through diplomatic means, and promote the cooling of the regional situation. The Palestinian issue has always been at the core of the Middle East problem, and the situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank is worrying. The foundation of the "two-state solution" is facing the risk of being hollowed out. The Security Council should urge all parties concerned, especially Israel, to fully comply with the Gaza ceasefire agreement, ensure humanitarian access, and cease settlement activities. The Security Council should send a strong signal to safeguard Lebanon's sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, urge all parties to cease hostilities, support the Lebanese government in stabilizing the domestic situation, and ensure basic livelihoods. Syria is currently in a critical period of political reconciliation and national reconstruction and development. The Security Council should support Syria in maintaining national stability, promoting political transition, improving people's livelihoods, and taking more effective measures to eliminate the threat of terrorism. Fu Cong stated that China will promote the Security Council to pay attention to Africa, support the resolution of African issues through African means, encourage relevant parties to resolve differences through dialogue and consultation, and ease regional tensions. China calls on the international community to increase humanitarian aid and development investment in African countries, support the countries concerned in enhancing their capacity for independent development, and eliminate the root causes of conflicts. When answering media questions about the Strait of Hormuz, Fu Cong stated that the most urgent task at present is to ensure that the ceasefire is maintained, to ensure that the US and Iran resume negotiations in good faith, and to lay the foundation for the reopening of the strait. Regarding the selection of the next Secretary General of the United Nations, Fu Cong stated that the United Nations is at an important juncture, and the international community needs a strong Secretary General who is truly committed to multilateralism and enhancing the role of the United Nations.
