Nuclear fusion energy has been included in the national "15th Five Year Plan" outline and listed as a key direction for future industries. Its basic principle is the same as the energy source of the sun, so it is called the "artificial sun". The 15th Five Year Plan period is a strategic critical period for China's fusion technology to shift from scientific experiments to engineering and industrialization. What is the latest progress of the fusion industry? At the National Fusion Industry Test Platform in Chengdu, Sichuan, the first wall of the core component of the "artificial sun" is like armor, directly facing the challenge of extremely high temperature of the central plasma and particle bombardment. Its core raw materials include three metals: tungsten, copper, and stainless steel. The first wall is located on the innermost side of the vacuum chamber of the "artificial sun" and is the first line of defense directly facing the high-temperature plasma, equivalent to the "close fitting armor" of the fusion device. At present, China has achieved independent research and development, manufacturing, and testing of the first wall throughout the entire process. Materials, welding processes, and high heat load testing have all reached the international leading level, which is also one of the core breakthroughs in the implementation of controllable fusion engineering in China. As China's "new generation artificial solar" device, the "China Circulation No. 3" has achieved a "double billion degree" of ion temperature of 120 million degrees Celsius and electron temperature of 160 million degrees Celsius, with fusion comprehensive parameters reaching the order of 10-20. Currently, the "China Circulation III" is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade as planned, with the first combustion experiment scheduled for 2027. Researchers told reporters that nuclear fusion power generation aims to achieve fusion combustion and energy output, solve stable operation and engineering reliability issues, and ultimately reduce costs through scale and technological iteration. Bai Xingyu, Deputy Director of the Fusion Technology Research Institute at the Southwest Institute of Physics in the Nuclear Industry, stated that the plan is to develop our fusion pilot experimental reactor by 2035 and a demonstration reactor around 2045, following the logic of experimental reactor demonstration reactor commercial reactor. In addition to "China Circulation III", another "artificial sun" project is working towards the next experimental goal in Hefei, Anhui, and is progressing in an orderly manner towards the overall goal of commercialization. Yang Qingxi, a researcher of the Plasma Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hefei Institute of Physics, said: "Comprehensive coordination is necessary for finance, science and technology, and industry. No one can be lacking.". With strong support and attention from the government, the trend is very good, and the development of this trend will help shorten the process of commercial application of fusion.
