The "Seagull Evolution Edition" drone. Recently, the biomimetic fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicle "Seagull Evolution Edition" developed by the Dutch high-altitude surveillance company was unveiled at the Brussels Beidex Defense Exhibition. As a reconnaissance platform, it is designed specifically to integrate into coastal environments. Generally speaking, it is difficult for drones to conduct reconnaissance missions in target ports, coastlines, and other areas, which can alert relevant personnel. However, the "Seagull Evolution Edition" drone is not easily detected. This is a drone that looks like a seagull, capable of imitating the appearance and flight posture of seagulls, and is easily regarded as a "natural existence" in coastal environments. The design concept of the "Seagull Evolution Edition" drone belongs to the field of bionics. In recent years, bionics has been increasingly applied in the design of unmanned aerial vehicles. Taking Robird, a flapping wing unmanned aerial vehicle developed by a Dutch company, as an example, its biomimetic object is the flapping motion of birds, relying on mechanical structures to drive the wings to generate lift and thrust, and its flight posture is similar to that of real birds. The "Seagull Evolved Edition" drone mimics the appearance and gliding movements of seagulls, relying on the dual propellers at the front end of the wings to drive it, while also possessing the ability to use hot air currents for unpowered gliding. During gliding, the operator can turn off the motor in a timely manner to achieve silent flight, effectively reducing the probability of being detected by acoustic detection equipment. According to publicly available information, the "Seagull Evolution Edition" drone takes only 3 minutes from assembly to deployment, with a body weight of less than 1.5 kilograms without mission payload. It has functions such as autonomous driving and waypoint navigation, and the communication distance for command and control is 5 to 10 kilometers. It adopts hand thrown takeoff and belly recovery methods, and is equipped with two types of reconnaissance payloads: electro-optical and infrared, which can conduct day and night reconnaissance. From the above performance, if applied to military purposes, the "Seagull Evolution Edition" drone is not suitable for long-range reconnaissance and is likely to develop into a drone for monitoring and close range reconnaissance of coasts, seaports, and other areas.
