In the era of intelligence, do we still need deep reading

2026-04-22

Artificial intelligence, big data and other technologies are rapidly iterating, and digital reading has already entered a period of rapid development. The "portable library" built by smartphones and reading platforms makes reading within reach. Data shows that by 2025, China's digital reading revenue will reach nearly 79 billion yuan, with a total of over 70 million works, and the industry scale will continue to expand. But behind the prosperity, the information cocoon woven by algorithms limits people's cognitive horizons, and fragmented and fast food reading methods dissolve deep thinking. In the late night, how many people's phone screens flash with cold light, and their fingertips swipe through a massive amount of information. A question that becomes increasingly clear: Do we still need deep reading? On the occasion of World Book Day, the 5th National Reading Conference gave a resounding answer: reading forms can keep up with the times, the core value of reading can never be replaced, and deep reading is not outdated, but increasingly urgent in the era of intelligence. As Wu Shulin, Chairman of the China Publishing Association, once said, "In the digital age, the more efficient the tools are, the more it is necessary to delve deep into reading." Deep reading plays an irreplaceable role in cultivating innovative thinking and enhancing innovation capabilities. The process of constructing a mind map between lines and lines by readers is essentially the physical reconstruction of synapses in brain neurons. This refactoring process promotes the systematic construction of knowledge modules. In the face of fragmented information flooding the internet, "deep reading" is like building a "cognitive breakwater". Digital technology and deep reading are not in opposition. The Regulations on the Promotion of National Reading have long been clear, supporting the integration and development of digital reading and traditional reading. Technology is a tool to expand the boundaries of reading, not an excuse to replace deep thinking. On short video platforms, a 450 minute interpretation video of "Dream of the Red Chamber" received 13.37 million likes, 370 million views, and attracted 1.5 million complete viewers. In fact, digital reading has not ended or replaced traditional reading, but has enriched and expanded the ways of reading, presenting a trend of each having its own strengths, complementing each other, and coexisting for a long time. Fragmented information brings more short-term sensory stimulation. Only through deep reading can we refine our thinking logic, enrich our spiritual world, and cultivate our moral character. This is the core charm that cannot be replaced by deep reading. Nowadays, 'restoring reading ability' has become a social consensus, which is not about rejecting new media or resisting new technologies, but about maintaining the initiative of thinking in the digital age. National reading needs to shift from pursuing breadth of coverage to deepening cultivation. We need to strengthen digital reading guidance, break free from algorithmic constraints, and guide the public to shift from fragmented browsing to immersive deep reading. For example, making good use of technological tools such as artificial intelligence and big data to grasp the overview of knowledge, guiding the whole society to establish a consciousness of deep reading, actively studying classics, and cultivating high-quality products. Improve the management standards for AI generated content, establish mechanisms for information screening and high-quality content selection, continuously optimize algorithm recommendation logic, and strengthen digital reading guidance and ability training to enhance the public's ability to identify and think deeply about information. Only then can reading truly play the role of enlightening and enhancing intelligence. Therefore, the more advanced the technology, the less it can lose the ability to think deeply; The louder the times are, the more we need to adhere to the original intention of immersive reading.
