Sweden increases purchase of autonomous underwater vehicles

2026-04-21

Swedish GAVIA autonomous underwater vehicle. Recently, the Swedish Defense Materials Management Agency added the procurement of GAVIA autonomous underwater vehicles and supporting payload modules during the Gothenburg Naval Technical Conference. Sweden signed the relevant procurement framework agreement in 2025 and completed the delivery of the first batch of systems in January this year. This renewal indicates that Sweden is continuing to promote the modernization of its navy and the construction of its underwater surveillance capabilities. The GAVIA autonomous underwater vehicle adopts a modular design, with a length that can be adjusted between 1.8 meters and 4.5 meters according to mission configuration, and a maximum speed of over 5.5 knots. It can be used for tasks such as anti mine, explosive disposal, and critical underwater infrastructure inspection, helping to reduce the exposure risk of personnel and high-value manned platforms in high-risk waters. After the delivery of a new batch of autonomous underwater vehicles, Sweden will further strengthen its underwater situational awareness and underwater target disposal capabilities. (New Society)
