The 'camellia' on the banks of the Dulong River has bloomed in the hearts of the villagers

On the southwestern border, driving north along the Nu River Grand Canyon from Lushui, Yunnan, after a 6-hour bumpy ride, then climbing over the snow capped mountain pass of Gaoligong Mountain and passing through the Dulong River Tunnel, one can reach Dulong River Township in Gongshan. Outside the car window, the cliff is deep and bottomless. The spring chill is sharp, and all things wither. Only the camellia flowers deep in Gaoligong Mountain bloom under the spring snow - camellia flowers, as white as snow, rooted in the crevices of the rocks. The officers and soldiers of a certain company of the Southern Theater Command Army stationed here said that the flower is like themselves. Company medic He Tao is a veteran who has been guarding for 13 years. Some comrades like to call him "Dr. He". In addition to medicine, his medicine box is always filled with compressed biscuits and candies. He said that the most unforgettable memories during the defense days were the steep patrol roads and the remote villages. The 100 kilometer patrol line guarded by the platoon is known as the "Death Road" and "Deadly Cliff". As a health worker, He Tao ensured the health of his comrades along the way; As a member of the patrol team, no matter how far or dangerous the road is, he never falls behind. In the past 13 years, He Tao has just walked through every boundary post in his jurisdiction. His backpack is heavier than his comrades in arms, who jokingly said, "Doctor He is carrying a 'treasure chest'." Last summer, there were rainstorm in the Dulong River, and mudslides washed down with boulders. The only road to the outside of Bapo Village was interrupted, and several tourists were trapped in the village. He Tao and his comrades walked into the waist high river together, holding hands and setting up a "guardrail" for tourists to hold onto their shoulders and wade slowly to the other side of the river. Subsequently, He Tao examined the wounds of the tourists and bandaged them to stop bleeding. Every time the patrol team passes through Kongdang Village, they have to visit several elderly grandmothers of the Dulong tribe known as "tattooed women". The "tattooed woman" is a unique cultural custom of the Dulong ethnic group living in the Nujiang region. This tradition has lasted for thousands of years and has now become a disappearing 'living fossil'. 80 year old "tattooed woman" Ken Guofang's elderly mother has difficulty with her legs and feet, and has been suffering from rheumatism for years. Every once in a while, He Tao comes home with his comrades and common medicine. Grandma shouted "Mamu" (meaning "relative") when she saw it from a distance, and He Tao crouched down to help her measure her blood pressure and change the ointment. The soldiers chopped firewood, swept the yard, and filled the water tank. We used to suffer, but now life is sweet. The soldiers take good care of us. ”Grandma smiled and said. Looking out the window at the swaying camellias in the wind and rain, He Tao silently said in his heart, "Isn't staying here just to protect this sweetness?" As the night deepened, the lights of the riverside camp lit up, blending with the pure white camellias of the distant mountains. The flowers bloom in the wind and snow, on the edge of cliffs, and also on the hearts of the villagers in Dulong River. The officers and soldiers of the company have changed one after another, but their steadfastness has never changed. Every time they return from patrol, they warmly greet their fellow villagers as they pass by the village. In the hearts of the officers and soldiers, the mountains, waters, and people here have long been their hometowns. (New Society)
