Enable brain computer interfaces to better integrate into reality

A patient with high paraplegia due to cervical spinal cord injury, after implantation of a brain computer interface system, can use their "mind" to control an intelligent wheelchair to walk around the community and command a robotic dog to retrieve takeout... This is a clinical trial result recently announced in China. At present, China's brain computer interface technology has reached a new stage of implantation into the human brain, and a batch of breakthrough achievements have emerged intensively. Science fiction scenes become reality faster than many people expected. Brain computer interface technology establishes an information channel between the human brain and machines to achieve collaborative interaction between biological intelligence and machine intelligence. The application of brain computer interface technology can improve the quality of life of patients, such as helping paralyzed patients operate wheelchairs, helping ALS patients convert EEG signals into speech, and helping stroke patients rebuild motor function. Under the strong traction of clinical demand, technology has rapidly developed: invasive clinical trial systems delay compression to within 100 milliseconds, with almost synchronized thoughts and actions; Significant results have been achieved in semi invasive multicenter registered clinical trials; Non invasive products help patients restore some of their bodily functions. Multiple technological routes are advancing simultaneously, and China has moved from "following" to "running in parallel" and even partially "leading" in this field. The cultivation cycle of future industries is long and the market risk is high, so institutional supply needs to be ahead of industrial demand. Currently, various regions are using real measures to strengthen the fertile soil of the planting industry. Shanghai Minhang District is building the country's first brain computer interface future industry cluster area, "Brain Intelligence World", with about 30 brain computer interface enterprises settling here, "going up and down is upstream and downstream"; Haizhu District, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province has launched the construction of "Pazhou Brain Valley" to promote the deep integration of algorithm industry and brain computer interface; Hubei has set a price for brain computer interface medical services, clarifying three charging standards to lay the foundation for future technology implementation services for patients. Brain computer interfaces span across multiple disciplines such as neuroscience, materials, chips, artificial intelligence, and clinical medicine, and industrialization bottlenecks are also scattered in multiple stages such as approval, pricing, and payment. To solve the problems faced by such cross integrated future industries, a single breakthrough is far from enough. It is necessary to introduce and implement full chain policy measures to achieve cross departmental collaboration. It should also be noted that China's brain computer interface technology still faces many challenges. How to reliably, stably, and persistently obtain EEG signals after implantation, how to select the target for implantation, and how to achieve long-term compatibility between the implant and brain tissue... These issues still plague experts. The key to overcoming these challenges lies in fully leveraging the advantages of the new national system, adhering to the principle of "industry setting questions, technology answering questions", and concentrating efforts on tackling key bottlenecks. Led by the Beijing Institute of Neuroscience and Brain like Research, we have gathered multiple forces to systematically layout electrodes, chips, algorithms, and clinical innovation throughout the entire chain. We have launched two sets of intelligent brain computer systems, "Beinao-1" and "Beinao-2", both of which have reached the world's leading level. Practice has proven that reshaping the scientific research paradigm with an efficient organizational system and organically integrating government, market, and society can gather joint forces to enhance future industrial competitiveness. The outline of the 15th Five Year Plan proposes to promote quantum technology, biomanufacturing, hydrogen and nuclear fusion energy, brain computer interfaces, embodied intelligence, and sixth generation mobile communication as new economic growth points. At present, global technological innovation has entered an unprecedentedly intensive and active period. Whoever forms a breakthrough from 0 to 1 first will be able to take the lead in product discourse, industry definition, and game initiative in global competition. The Thousand Sail Constellation has over a hundred satellites in orbit, the domestically produced quantum computer operating system "Benyuan Sinan" has officially opened for global download, and humanoid robots have appeared on the Spring Festival Gala for two consecutive years... Leading industrial innovation with technological innovation and exploring future industrial development directions are important contents and effective paths to stimulate new quality production capacity. By comprehensively enhancing our independent innovation capabilities and continuously generating new quality productivity, we will surely form new competitive advantages and win strategic initiative. General Secretary Xi Jinping profoundly pointed out that "the formation of disruptive technologies is a process of accumulation and gradual development", and called for "continuously making new breakthroughs in promoting the development of China's future industries". The road to the future is unfolding in an unprecedented way.
