Spring is the golden period for height growth, don't let bad habits "steal" your child's height

Spring is the time when children grow up. Recently, Li Hui, Deputy Director of Pediatrics at Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, pointed out in an interview with reporters that some seemingly insignificant things in life are quietly lowering children's height, and parents need to pay high attention to them. Li Hui stated that growth hormone is the key factor in determining height, and its secretion at night is 3 to 5 times higher than during the day. The peak secretion period is from 22:00 to 2:00 in the morning, and it can only be efficiently secreted during deep sleep. If a child often falls asleep after 22:30, it can directly lead to insufficient secretion of growth hormone. Nutritional balance is the material basis for bone growth, which is also a common misconception for parents. Li Hui introduced that bone growth requires the synergistic effect of multiple nutrients such as calcium, protein, vitamin D, and zinc. However, in reality, many children have a problem with a single diet, either only eating staple foods and meat, or using snacks instead of meals. He specifically reminded that high sugar foods such as sweet drinks, candies, milk tea, etc. have significant harm. These foods can stimulate insulin secretion, inhibit growth hormone activity, hinder calcium absorption, and also easily cause obesity and precocious puberty, leading to premature closure of epiphyses and shortening the growth cycle. Lack of exercise is also an important factor affecting height. But nowadays, many children, due to academic pressure and addiction to electronic devices, sit for long periods of time without moving, which not only slows down their height growth rate, but also easily leads to problems such as hunchback and chest. In addition, Li Hui emphasized that children should avoid heavy weight-bearing exercises such as weightlifting to prevent damage to joint cartilage and hinder longitudinal growth of long bones. Li Hui also mentioned that supplements such as royal jelly, colostrum, and ginseng mostly contain hormones, and long-term consumption can easily lead to early puberty in children. Although there may be a short-term height increase, it can cause the epiphyseal plates to close prematurely. In addition, excessive supplementation of calcium tablets and protein can also increase the burden on children's digestive system. Li Hui suggests that in terms of diet, it is recommended to pair it with milk, eggs, lean meat, fish and shrimp, fruits and vegetables, nuts and coarse grains every day, eat less sweets and snacks, and have three meals that are 70% full; In terms of sleep, encourage children to fall asleep before 21:30 and enter deep sleep before 22:00. Ensure 8-10 hours of sleep every day, stay away from electronic devices before bedtime, and avoid sleeping with lights on; In terms of exercise, engage in 30-60 minutes of vertical exercise every day, combined with moderate sun exposure, to promote vitamin D synthesis. The recommended daily intake of vitamin D is 400IU. In terms of monitoring, measure the height of the child once a month. If the annual growth is less than 5 centimeters or significantly lagging behind peers, seek medical attention promptly. (New Society)
