China's polar ice drilling breaks international record for deepest hot water drilling

2026-04-09

The reporter learned from the Ministry of Natural Resources that China's 42nd Antarctic Expedition has successfully completed China's first Antarctic ice sheet hot water drilling experiment in the Qilin Ice Lake area of Southeast Antarctica, with a drilling depth of 3413 meters, breaking the international record of 2540 meters for the deepest polar hot water drilling. This marks China's ability to conduct drilling research on more than 90% of the Antarctic ice sheet and all of the Arctic ice sheet. Polar ice hot water drilling research is an international cutting-edge scientific research that studies changes in the Earth's ancient environment, predicts climate change, explores the boundaries of life, and expands human cognition. Compared to traditional mechanical ice drills, hot water drilling has strong penetration capabilities, high drilling efficiency, minimal disturbance to ice bodies, and is easy to achieve large-diameter and clean operations. It can efficiently reach key interfaces such as subglacial lakes, ice shelf bottoms, and subglacial bedrock. It is the mainstream technology for international research on polar ice caps and deep ice shelf environments. This on-site experiment is supported by the National Key R&D Program under the main responsibility of the Ministry of Natural Resources. The main goal is to carry out a demonstration of the application of a deep ice sheet hot water drilling system in Antarctica. By drilling through the ice sheet above the Qilin Ice Lake, it provides a pollution-free channel and key technical support for subsequent in-situ observation of the ice lake and collection of water and lake bottom samples. The on-site experiment of this mission went through multiple stages including sea ice and inland material transportation, equipment assembly and commissioning, hot water drilling operations, and process pollution monitoring, successfully drilling through the ice cover of Qilin Ice Lake. The experiment is aimed at ice caps over 3000 meters thick, integrating multiple equipment suitable for polar sites and meeting the needs of high-precision and fast clean drilling. It has also broken through key core technologies such as low-temperature resistance, external pollutant control, deep hose and winch high-precision control for polar hot water drilling. This successful drilling has achieved efficient, stable, and clean drilling of deep polar hot water drilling, filling the gap in China's field and laying a solid foundation for further large-scale application of polar hot water drilling and sampling, in-depth exploration of polar ice environments, and evolution of Earth's climate in China.
