Lydia Brito, Acting Assistant Director General for Social and Human Sciences at UNESCO, pointed out in her speech that Tai Chi has been spread in more than 180 countries and regions around the world, and was included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020. As an important component of traditional sports and competitive activities, Tai Chi has demonstrated its unique value in promoting peace and connecting different groups and generations. Yang Xinyu, the Chinese Ambassador to UNESCO, introduced in his speech that Tai Chi originated in China and has been passed down and developed for hundreds of years, embodying profound philosophical concepts of yin and yang balance and harmonious coexistence. It enlightens people that different elements can be mutually inclusive and promote each other, achieving overall harmony in dynamic balance. Diversity is not the root of differences, but an important foundation for achieving stability and lasting peace. As a traditional sport that caters to all age groups and spans different cultural backgrounds, Tai Chi has become an important link in promoting cultural exchange and people to people communication. In her speech, Zhang Yuping, Secretary General of the International Wushu Federation, stated that International Tai Chi Day will be an important platform to continue promoting the internationalization, standardization, and popularization of traditional Chinese sports such as Tai Chi, and to help deeply integrate national fitness and health, contributing sports strength to promoting the physical and mental health of people around the world and building a community with a shared future for mankind. At the event, Tai Chi practitioners from China and France performed together, with movements that were smooth, flexible, and balanced. The concept of yin-yang balance and harmony between heaven and man was integrated into each move, showcasing traditional charm and contemporary atmosphere. In the interactive experience session, Zhang Yuping demonstrated on site, and the audience actively participated, immersing themselves in the unique charm of Tai Chi Chuan's balance of movement and stillness, as well as its internal and external cultivation, pushing the atmosphere to a climax. In November 2025, the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference passed a resolution to establish March 21st as International Tai Chi Day every year. This is the first international day named after a martial arts event in the United Nations system, marking the widespread recognition of the important value of Tai Chi by the international community. Around March 21st, the International Wushu Federation, the Chinese Wushu Association, and relevant organizations around the world will also hold various forms of celebration activities. (New Society)
