Reading China at the London Book Fair

2026-03-17

Recently, the three-day 2026 London Book Fair was held at the Olympia Exhibition Centre in London. As an important indicator of the global publishing industry, this book fair has attracted nearly a thousand exhibitors and 30000 professionals from over 90 countries and regions, with in-depth exchanges on the development trends of the publishing industry. The Chinese publishing delegation showcased over 4000 high-quality books under the theme of "Reading China", and held more than 40 special events around book exhibitions, new book releases, author discussions, copyright cooperation, and more. Several attendees expressed that in recent years, the international community's interest in understanding and reading about China has continued to rise, and Sino foreign publishing cooperation has presented a more rich and vivid picture. The China Joint Exhibition booth at the London Book Fair features five themed exhibition areas, including Chinese themed books and Chinese boutique books. The exhibited books not only carry the profound cultural heritage of China's publishing industry, but also demonstrate the distinct vitality of the times. Among them, more than 1300 foreign language books cover multiple languages such as English, French, German, Spanish, Arabic, etc., covering various categories such as current affairs, literature, culture, and children's literature. There are academic monographs, popular reading materials, as well as enlightenment picture books, Chinese learning textbooks, academic journals, etc., showcasing the diversified and specialized development pattern of Chinese publishing, allowing overseas readers to read vivid Chinese stories and appreciate the profound Chinese civilization. Theme publishing books are the core section of the exhibition booth, becoming an important window for the international community to understand China in the new era. The first volume of the English version of "Chronicles of Governance in the New Era", "China's Solution: Global Governance and International Cooperation", "Analyzing China under Global Development Initiatives from an Economic Perspective" and other books analyze China's economic and social development achievements from multiple perspectives, demonstrating China's responsibility and accountability in global governance. During the book fair, multiple reports focusing on China's economic and social development were successively released. Among them, the English versions of "China Development Report 2025" and "Global Development Report 2025", guided by the China Foreign Languages Administration and hosted by Foreign Languages Publishing House and China Development Publishing House, held their first book launch ceremony. Long Guoqiang, deputy director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, said that China Development Report 2025 interprets China's development code from the perspective of a think tank, and comprehensively records the ideas, systems and practical achievements in China's process of promoting Chinese path to modernization in 2024; The Global Development Report 2025 focuses on global development issues, reviews progress in implementing relevant agendas, and explores practical and feasible development paths. Two reports contribute Chinese wisdom and solutions to global development from different dimensions. At the "New Era China and the World" themed seminar and multilingual new book launch event, four multilingual new books were globally released. Former Director of the London Economic and Business Policy Office, Ross Yi, and President of Egypt's Hikmet Cultural Industry Group, Ahmed Said, among others, fully affirmed the bridging role of Chinese publishing in cultural exchange and provided important guidance for the international community to better understand China. Marcelino Elosuva, founder of Reed Publishing in Spain, stated that publishing is not just a commercial activity, but should also have cultural significance. The new book released on the same day further enriches the narrative and expression of China's development with diverse perspectives and an international author lineup. At the book fair, there are not only Chinese themed publications and traditional cultural works, but also new content forms such as digital experiences and IP development. The presentation of classic works and research achievements such as "Yongle Encyclopedia" and "Tsinghua University's Collection of Warring States Bamboo Slips" in conjunction with VR immersive experience projects reflects the trend of Chinese publishing extending from "displaying books" to "displaying content ecology" on the international stage. The cooperation model between Chinese and foreign publishing is not limited to a single copyright procurement, but increasingly emphasizes full chain cooperation such as content localization and adaptation, translation quality polishing, global distribution and promotion, and digital technology linkage. Long term strategic cooperation has become the mainstream consensus in the Chinese and foreign industries. During the book fair, multiple events were held, including the "Archaeology and Fairy Tales - Cultural and Creative Works Seminar", "Mai Family Works Translation Exhibition", and "Sino British Publishing Creative Industry Exchange Activity". At the Writers' Dialogue Salon, renowned Chinese writers and overseas literature enthusiasts exchange and share their creative experiences, telling the patriotism behind their words; At the China UK Publishing Cooperation Forum, experts from both countries freely expressed their opinions and exchanged experiences on hot topics such as the transformation of publishing in the era of artificial intelligence, copyright protection, and digital publishing; At the copyright signing ceremony, works with real-life themes such as "The Past of Nehe" and traditional Chinese cultural picture books were signed with overseas institutions to enter a broader global market. Several figures in the UK publishing and translation industries have stated that interest in Chinese literature and culture has continued to rise overseas in recent years. Jenny Niven, the director of the Edinburgh Book Festival in the UK, said after visiting the China Joint Exhibition stand that the core of Chinese literature is extremely infectious. In the past, many readers had limited understanding of Chinese works, but now more and more high-quality translations are landing. High quality translations build a bridge of communication, allowing more British readers to understand the warmth of Chinese stories. Paul Francis, Global Publishing Director of Springer Nature Group, stated that the progress of academic publishing in China is evident, and the Chinese publishing industry is becoming an indispensable force in the global industry. British publishing industry practitioner Ray said that China's publishing cooperation with other countries is increasingly showing a two-way exchange trend, emphasizing mutual understanding, joint participation, and sustained cooperation. The research data disclosed at the book fair is noteworthy: only one-third of children in the UK are willing to actively read during their leisure time, and half of adults are gradually moving away from deep reading. The reading habits of the younger generation are deeply changed by digital entertainment. Global publishers are calling for optimizing the form of content products, launching lightweight, graphic, and audio reading materials, and adapting to fragmented reading scenarios; Collaborate with schools, communities, and other social forces to deeply cultivate children's reading enlightenment and foster a nationwide reading environment. Marcelino Elosuva stated that only by adhering to content quality, protecting copyright values, and meeting the needs of readers can the industry achieve long-term development, which is the common pursuit of the global publishing industry.
