In spring, London is filled with the fragrance of books. The 2026 London Book Fair will be held from March 10th to 12th at the Olympia Exhibition Centre in London. Nearly a thousand publishing institutions and approximately 30000 publishing professionals from over 90 countries and regions gather here. In the crowded exhibition hall, the China joint exhibition booth with the theme of "Reading China" is particularly eye-catching, becoming a space for many overseas publishers to stop and exchange ideas. The Chinese publishing delegation participated in the exhibition with over 4000 books and 5500 publications, including about 1300 foreign language editions covering various fields such as thematic publishing, literature and art, traditional culture, academic research, and scientific journals. From the development concept of contemporary China to the cultural classics that have lasted for thousands of years, from literary narrative to academic research, Chinese publishing presents itself on the international publishing stage with a rich and diverse appearance. Inside the exhibition booth, books outline a three-dimensional picture of Chinese culture. The multilingual version of the relevant reading system presents China's development philosophy and governance practices; The award-winning works such as the Mao Dun Literature Award and the "Five One Project" Award are gathered in the China Fine Books Exhibition Area, recording the changes of the times and social temperature through literary narrative. In the exhibition area of traditional Chinese culture, classics and research achievements such as the Yongle Encyclopedia, the Warring States bamboo slips collected by Tsinghua University, and the Chinese painting series of various dynasties have attracted many visitors to stop and browse. The VR immersive experience project "Light and Shadow Danqing" set up in the exhibition area uses digital technology to recreate the beauty of traditional Chinese painting, allowing the audience to experience the distant charm of Eastern art in a virtual space. Contrasting with cultural classics is the continuous progress of Chinese publishing in academic and technological fields. Multiple Chinese and English scientific journals selected for the "China Science and Technology Journal Excellence Action Plan" were showcased on site. The publishing IP achievements developed around cultural elements such as Dunhuang and Bashu also showcased the increasingly active exploration of China's cultural and creative industries at the exhibition booth. If book exhibitions are static cultural displays, then a series of exchange activities inject interactive vitality into book fairs. During the book fair, the Chinese side held more than 40 publishing cultural activities, covering new book releases, copyright negotiations, writer discussions, and academic forums. The "New Era China and the World" themed seminar and book launch event held on the opening day attracted numerous publishers and scholars to participate. Former Director of the London Economic and Business Policy Office, Sir Run Run Shaw, and Director of the China Institute at King's College London, Kerry Brown, and other guests discussed China's development and global cooperation, sharing their observations of China's experience from different perspectives. How cultural heritage can enter the world in new ways has also become a topic of communication. At the "Archaeology and Fairy Tales - Cultural and Creative Theme Works Seminar", Chinese children's literature writers shared fairy tale works inspired by the Sanxingdui culture, and explored the contemporary expression of historical relics in literature with British writers. The overseas dissemination of contemporary Chinese literature has also attracted attention from the publishing industry. The translation exhibition and copyright exchange activities of Mai Jia's works held during the book fair attracted representatives from publishing institutions from multiple countries to participate. Around the future development of the publishing industry, the Sino British Creative Industry Exchange Event also discussed topics such as youth IP development, digital content innovation, and international distribution. Industry insiders say that with the rapid development of digital technology, the publishing industry is transitioning from traditional content production to knowledge services and multimedia dissemination, and the space for international cooperation is constantly expanding. At the book fair, cultural activities such as the exhibition of classic Chinese comic illustrations, the exhibition of Chinese Su embroidery art, and the experience of Chinese tea culture also attracted many visitors to participate. Overseas publishers have stated that the London Book Fair is not only an important trading platform for the global publishing industry, but also a window to observe different cultures. Through books and exchange activities, the China exhibition area provides international publishers with another path to understand the development of Chinese society and culture, promoting the encounter and mutual understanding of different civilizations through reading and communication.
