Rehabilitation medicine is a medical discipline that improves physical function, reduces disease states, and enhances health levels. However, currently rehabilitation medicine has not been designated as a first level discipline in the discipline catalog of the Ministry of Education. Rehabilitation medicine and physical therapy are only listed as second level disciplines under clinical medicine, while traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation and integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine rehabilitation are separately established as second level disciplines outside the catalogs of traditional Chinese medicine and integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. This decentralized setting seriously restricts the development of rehabilitation medicine. Therefore, I propose the following suggestions. One is to establish rehabilitation medicine as a first level discipline. Further clarify the independent status of rehabilitation medicine in the modern medical system, promote the formation of a more scientific, systematic, and complete academic system and disciplinary framework, meet the urgent needs of rehabilitation medicine discipline development and talent cultivation, and promote the high-quality development of rehabilitation medicine. Promote the construction of a full cycle and full process health service system for prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and health promotion. The second is to organize relevant universities and research institutions across the country to scientifically define the connotation and knowledge system of the discipline based on the development laws of rehabilitation medicine and the current situation of talent cultivation and scientific research, clarify the relationship between the first level discipline of rehabilitation medicine and its subordinate second level disciplines, and plan the discipline layout in a forward-looking and systematic manner.
