China releases two national standards for cognitive friendly environments to help address population aging

2026-03-10

Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation (National Standards Committee) approved the release of two recommended national standards, namely "Requirements and Guidelines for Inclusive Communities with Cognitive Impairment in Aging Society Part 1: Residential Communities" (GB/T 47131.1-2026) and "Requirements and Guidelines for Inclusive Communities with Cognitive Impairment in Aging Society Part 2: Residential Communities" (GB/T 47131.2-2026), providing scientific and normative support for building dementia friendly communities and family environments. The two standards focus on high-frequency life scenarios for people with dementia, and provide systematic requirements for the two core scenarios of residential communities and residences. Among them, residential community standards are standardized around roads, buildings, landscapes, signs, supporting service facilities, and related services; The living standards set specific requirements for the overall layout, general settings, and functional spaces such as bedrooms, dining rooms, living rooms (halls), and bathrooms, helping to create a dementia friendly community "big environment" and a family "small environment", effectively enhancing the sense of achievement, happiness, and security of the dementia population and their family members. The State Administration for Market Regulation stated that China has the largest number of elderly and dementia patients in the world. In 2024, China has transformed the international standard "Inclusive Community Framework for Cognitive Impairment in Aging Society" into a national standard. The two standards released this time are further refinement and extension of the international standard, further improving the cognitive impairment friendly environment standard system. Next, China will continue to promote the development of inclusive standards for cognitive impairment in public spaces and social places outside communities, based on actual needs, and continuously create a friendly, convenient, inclusive and understanding social atmosphere, providing solid guarantees for the deepening of the national strategy to actively respond to population aging.
