During the National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Gao Youdong, a National People's Congress representative and member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, proposed the creation of a national characteristic ethnic pattern gene database to find a new path for the inheritance and transformation of "beautiful and common" ethnic patterns. From the "Hamur" pattern on Mongolian yurts to the Zhuang brocade pattern of "Phoenix Wearing Peony", ethnic patterns serve as important carriers of cultural heritage of various ethnic groups in China, carrying rich historical memories, cultural connotations, and artistic value. Specifically regarding ethnic patterns, how should the deployment of "strengthening the protection and inheritance of cultural heritage" proposed in the draft outline of the 15th Five Year Plan be implemented? In recent years, the attention of the domestic academic community to ethnic patterns has continued to rise. Not only has the number of related research papers increased, but some universities and research teams have also created various ethnic pattern databases to explore their transformation and application. During his research, Gao Youdong found that there is a lack of interoperability and sharing among existing databases, resulting in a 'data island'. Moreover, many databases still remain at the level of "pattern digitization", with insufficient exploration and annotation of "genetic information" such as cultural semantics, historical context, and craftsmanship behind patterns. The shortcomings in database construction have constrained the research, protection, and innovative application of pattern resources. Some patterns are on the verge of disappearing due to inheritance gaps, "said Gao Youdong. In addition, some ethnic patterns have been digitized by foreign institutions and used for commercial development, which also worries him that "our cultural resources are facing the risk of loss". To this end, Gao Youdong suggests leveraging the resource advantages of university libraries in border ethnic areas, supporting their construction of ethnic pattern databases, and collaborating with local cultural centers and intangible cultural heritage protection centers to collect and digitize resources under national unified standards. At the same time, by developing a deep annotation and cultural analysis system, creating an application transformation and innovation service platform, establishing a "public resources+authorized resources" hierarchical authorization mechanism and benefit sharing mechanism, etc., comprehensive support is provided for the inheritance, protection, research and transformation of pattern resources. Taking application transformation as an example, pattern resources can be developed into aesthetic education curriculum resource packages for primary and secondary schools, as well as digital cultural and creative products and immersive experience projects for local cultural and tourism projects. Gao Youdong stated that the establishment of a national characteristic ethnic pattern gene database will help to inherit and protect excellent traditional Chinese culture, and strengthen the sense of community of the Chinese nation; On the other hand, it provides data support for ethnology, art history, cultural and creative industries, and promotes the integration of culture and tourism with the digital economy. At the same time, we should have the power to interpret culture globally and resist "cultural appropriation". (New Society)
