Hong Kong achieves first green methanol refueling on ship

2026-03-06

The world's first methanol dual fuel powered roll on/roll off ship, "Gangrong," completed green methanol refueling operations in port on the 5th. This is the first green methanol injection operation in Hong Kong. On the same day, Chen Meibao, Secretary for Transport and Logistics of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, delivered a speech at the refueling ceremony, stating that Hong Kong has become one of the world's shipping center ports for the normal operation and refueling of liquefied natural gas and biodiesel. By 2025, Hong Kong has carried out 16 liquefied natural gas refueling and 110 biodiesel refueling, involving a green marine fuel refueling volume of over 220000 tons. Chen Meibao stated that the SAR government will launch the "Green Marine Fuel Refueling Action Plan" in November 2024 to establish a comprehensive green fuel supply chain and ecosystem. Within three months of its promulgation, Hong Kong successfully achieved its first liquefied natural gas refueling. Chen Meibao pointed out that the mainland will be the largest producer of green marine fuel in the world, and companies can transport fuel to Hong Kong through different supply chains. There are also different new power refueling vessels available to serve Hong Kong. As a platform that combines different enterprises and suppliers, Hong Kong has developed into a green fuel refueling and trading center, reflecting its unique advantages of relying on the motherland and connecting the world. Chen Meibao said that the international shipping industry requires a large amount of capital to build new ships or retrofit ships for the application of green fuels, and hopes that Hong Kong can be the preferred place for financing in the industry. Hong Kong will revise its legislation within the year to provide semi tax incentives for bulk commodity traders, in order to attract more international shipping and trading companies to settle in Hong Kong and further leverage the advantages of the "dual center" of international shipping and international finance. She revealed that the SAR government will lock in green methanol in the future, providing a full chain refueling and trading environment for global shipping companies. The Maritime Department previously released a code of conduct for methanol refueling, which facilitates the industry's green methanol refueling by providing tax incentives and other measures.
