Having good physical education classes is a key component of 'health first'
2026-03-02
Recently, the Ministry of Education held a meeting to deepen the implementation of the "health first" work deployment, comprehensively deploying and promoting the physical and mental health of students. The meeting emphasized the need to take the construction of healthy schools as the guide, strengthen the integration of the five educations, and focus on solving prominent problems in students' physical and mental health, so as to implement the "health first" education concept and promote students' physical and mental health and comprehensive development. For a long time, influenced by the one-sided pursuit of higher education rates, some schools have a tendency to prioritize intellectual education over physical education. Physical education classes have been squeezed out, students sit for long periods of time and do not move much, and problems such as "little glasses" and "little chubby bumps" have become prominent. The rate of achieving physical health standards fluctuates, and the quality of willpower and stress resistance need to be improved. These issues are not only stage contradictions in educational development, but also deep-seated deviations in educational philosophy. Scores can catch up, but health is difficult to start over. A truly good school should enable students to strengthen their physical fitness through running, cultivate their personality through competition, and hone their willpower through hard work, achieving comprehensive development. To thoroughly implement the clear requirements put forward in the "Health First" work deployment, a profound reshaping of educational values is necessary. Schools at all levels and types must resolutely reverse the tendency of "score based" and establish a clear orientation of "Health First". This deployment meeting requires the in-depth implementation of the student physical fitness plan, high-quality implementation of the daily comprehensive physical activity time for primary and secondary school students not less than 2 hours, strict inspection of the "yin-yang schedule", and resolute elimination of behaviors such as squeezing physical education classes and restricting students' outdoor activities. In practical implementation, the first step is to provide sufficient physical education courses: compulsory education ensures one physical education class per day, while high school physical education classes only increase and do not decrease. Through the mechanism of "schedule filing and public announcement+random inspection+parental supervision", we ensure that policies are implemented without discount. Secondly, it is necessary to ensure the quality of the activities: physical education classes cannot be conducted in a "herd style" manner, but must have intensity, density, skills, and fun, allowing students to truly move, run, and sweat brilliantly; The break between classes should be no less than 30 minutes long, with rich and colorful content, avoiding a "one size fits all" running exercise mode. Once again, we need to extend extracurricular exercise: promote class sports clubs and homework, extending sports from school to home, forming a "1-hour on campus+1-hour off campus" exercise pattern, and transforming sports from "school tasks" into students' daily habits. This deployment meeting emphasizes that the core of sports personnel is the integrated promotion of "teaching, diligent training, and regular competitions". Church "is the foundation: enabling students to master 1-2 lifelong beneficial sports skills, understand scientific fitness and safety protection. 'Diligent practice' is key: extending the classroom to break time, outside of class, and at home, implementing sports activities during break time, promoting class sports clubs and grade leagues, and making sports a normal part of campus life. 'Regular competition' is the guiding principle: to build a competition system that everyone can participate in, with competitions in each class and activities every month, so that every child has the opportunity to play, showcase their stage, and experience success. The value of sports goes far beyond enhancing physical fitness - learning respect through rules, resilience through confrontation, responsibility through collaboration, and openness through victory and defeat. As a grassroots principal, I have always believed that good education is about equipping students with healthy bodies, a positive mindset, and resilient character. We must adhere to the original intention of education, shoulder the mission of educating people, not squeeze a physical education class, not give up a student, and not relax a requirement, so that every physical education class becomes a solid foundation for students' lifelong health and benefits.
