Light fighter jet, five-star rating?

2026-02-25

In recent years, light fighter jets have been increasingly favored by the air forces of more and more countries due to their outstanding cost-effectiveness and strong mission adaptability, and have shown a steady upward trend in the global military trade market. So, in a strong adversarial combat environment, can light fighter jets play the main role in aerial combat? What is its future research and development direction? There are various types of light fighter jets. Military observer Zhang Xuefeng introduced that, except for a few models, the maximum takeoff weight of light fighter jets usually does not exceed 15 tons. Overall, they can be divided into two categories, and their performance and characteristics are different. The first type is specially designed light fighter aircraft. For example, Sweden's "Eagle Lion" fighter jet, China and Pakistan's jointly developed "JF-17" fighter jet, India's LCA fighter jet, and so on. These types of fighter jets typically possess supersonic flight capabilities, are equipped with advanced fire control radars and onboard weapons, and can engage in medium range air combat with high maneuverability. The second type is a light fighter developed on the basis of advanced trainer aircraft. For example, South Korea's FA-50 fighter jet is an improved version of the T-50 trainer aircraft, and Russia's Yak-130 advanced trainer aircraft and Italy's M-346 advanced trainer aircraft also have corresponding fighter models. This type of light fighter aircraft modified from trainer planes usually has some limitations in performance, such as some models not having supersonic flight capabilities or weaker mid-range air combat capabilities. Zhang Xuefeng believes that in the fiercely competitive air equipment market, the reason why light fighter jets can occupy a place is mainly due to their high cost-effectiveness and better fit the defense needs of small and medium-sized countries. Firstly, countries equipped with light fighter jets are mostly small and medium-sized, with relatively small land areas, and do not have high requirements for the combat radius of fighter jets. Secondly, the main air threats or combat opponents faced by these countries are often not strong, and some even primarily use fighter jets to combat illegal armed groups, so the requirements for the payload and air combat capabilities of fighter jets are not particularly high. Again, if some countries start developing medium or heavy fighter jets from the beginning, the technical difficulty is relatively high, so they will choose to start developing light fighter jets with relatively low technical barriers. Finally, and most importantly, these countries often do not have enough funds to purchase more advanced medium or heavy fighter jets. Under similar technological conditions, the price advantage of light fighter jets is very obvious. In Zhang Xuefeng's view, the development trend of light fighter jets is mainly reflected in their small payload capacity, short combat radius, and the general lack of stealth capability in current models. Therefore, some countries may choose to purchase a certain number of medium or heavy fighter jets, forming a "high-low pairing" pattern with light fighter jets. In addition, with the development of stealth technology, light fighter jets are facing both new challenges and new opportunities for development. Stealth fighters typically place their weapons and ammunition in built-in ammunition compartments, while light fighters are limited by their size and find it difficult to design such compartments. In the future, if light fighters want to develop towards stealth, there may be two ways: first, redefine or improve the classification criteria for "light fighters", such as still classifying fighters weighing around 20 tons as light fighters. Secondly, the development of unmanned light stealth fighter jets can free up more space for fuel or mission equipment by eliminating the cockpit. These unmanned light fighter jets can serve as collaborative combat platforms for medium or heavy fighter jets, or as wingmen for manned fighter jets. (New Society)
