With the arrival of the Chinese New Year of the Horse, various regions in Vietnam have a strong New Year flavor. In the city of Hanoi, the flower market is crowded with people, with peach blossoms and kumquats filling the streets and alleys, and red decorations shining on the shop windows. The reporter drove away from the city and followed the Red River Delta to the west. The rice fields spread out in the winter sunshine, and the water surface shimmered with a faint light, gradually revealing a rural scenery. Tanglin Ancient Village, located on the outskirts of Hanoi, is one of the first villages on Vietnam's national level ancient village protection list. The village was formed thousands of years ago and still retains a relatively complete traditional spatial pattern to this day. The bluestone road passes through the village, and the reddish brown old walls show the texture of time under the warm sun. The banyan tree stands tall and the ancient well is quiet. Multiple old houses constructed with red soil, stone, and wood stand shoulder to shoulder, with undulating ridges and mottled lintels, preserving the typical rural architectural style of northern Vietnam. Celebrating the Spring Festival, the ancient village is even more vibrant. In front of the courtyard gate, there are blooming peach blossom potted plants, and the kumquat tree is full of fruits, symbolizing auspiciousness and abundance in the new year. The ancestral hall is filled with incense, and glutinous rice, fruits, and flowers are displayed on the altar. Villagers repair their doorways, post decorations, children play and chase, young city workers carry suitcases back home, and the festive atmosphere quietly heats up in the streets, alleys, and courtyards. In front of an ancient mansion, villager Lanyang stepped on a wooden stool and posted a red couplet written in Vietnamese with his family, which reads "Wealth from all directions, happy New Year". The bright red paper stands out against the old wall, with ink marks still fresh and a strong sense of New Year. Lanyang told reporters that pasting couplets is one of the important activities for the local Spring Festival, symbolizing welcoming the new year and praying for success. In addition to purchasing printed Spring Festival couplets, some families in the village also choose the words and phrases in advance, ask someone to write them with a brush, or even start writing them themselves, "mainly for the sake of good intentions". Recently, there have been more and more tourists visiting Tanglin Ancient Village, and traditional houses have become more lively due to the experience of New Year customs. In a ancestral courtyard with the Chinese character "Fangzhi" inscribed on the door post, 72 year old Du Mingyue welcomes visitors. She used to be a history teacher, and after retirement, she worked with her family to protect this ancestral home, which was built in 1674. According to her introduction, this used to be the residence of an education official from the surrounding provinces of Hanoi in the past. The main hall of the ancestral house also serves as the ancestral hall, and the interior decoration follows the traditional pattern. There are incense burners and festive offerings placed on the altar, and plaques and couplets with Chinese characters such as "Fu Shou Jia" and "Yang Xin An" hung between the wall and beams. Du Mingyue explained that during the Spring Festival, family members would clean and decorate their ancestral home, hang lanterns, and tidy up offering tables. Under the porch of the ancestral house, there are glutinous rice, mung beans, pork, zongzi leaves, and bamboo strips placed for visitors to learn about the production process of Vietnamese New Year zongzi. Du Mingyue introduced that Vietnamese people are accustomed to preparing annual rice dumplings during the Spring Festival. Laying the leaves, filling the filling, covering the rice, folding, and tying, each process was orderly. Soon, a square shaped rice dumpling with distinct edges appeared in her hand. The Spring Festival is one of the most important traditional festivals in Vietnam. The local saying "Salted buckwheat with fatty meat, red couplets, and green New Year rice dumplings with flags, poles, and firecrackers" summarizes the common elements of festivals in Vietnam. Peach blossoms and kumquats, ancestor worship and deity worship, many local customs during the Chinese New Year are quite similar to those in various provinces of Lingnan, China. Andrea Beck, an American tourist who experienced making dumplings on the spot, told reporters: "I once visited China. During the Spring Festival, the same red decorations and similar customs on the streets of China and Vietnam made people feel the close connection between the cultures of the two countries." Du Mingyue said that in recent years, more and more Chinese tourists have visited ancient villages. Their family specially prepared Chinese style Zongzi for Chinese tourists this year. In fact, the taste is similar. Where mountains and rivers are connected, the taste is also similar. With the deepening and solidification of cultural exchanges between China and Vietnam, Vietnam has become an increasingly popular tourist destination for Chinese people. According to the Vietnam News Agency, by 2025, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Vietnam will exceed 5.3 million, once again becoming the largest source of international tourists in Vietnam. One out of every four foreign tourists visiting Vietnam comes from China. Upon learning that the reporter was from China, Du Mingyue gave a thumbs up and said word by word, "China, the people, very good!" and hummed, "The East is red, the sun rises..." She explained that both this sentence and this song were taught by her elementary school teacher, and at that time, the song "The East is Red" was widely sung in Vietnam. This old man was born in the 1950s and has experienced the wars against France and the United States, witnessing the years of mutual assistance between China and Vietnam. During the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Chairman Ho Chi Minh participated in and supported China's resistance in Yan'an, Guilin, Chongqing, Kunming and other places. China has dispatched military and political advisory teams to support the Vietnamese people's resistance against France. The deep friendship between Vietnam and China, comrades and brothers, has become an indelible red memory. The year 2025, which has just passed, marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Vietnam and the "China Vietnam Cultural Exchange Year". A group of young people from China and Vietnam have embarked on a "red study tour", following the revolutionary footsteps of the older generation leaders of the two parties and countries, exploring the red genes of China Vietnam friendship. Vietnam and China are connected by mountains and rivers. ”Du Mingyue said that Vietnamese and Chinese people are neighbors, but also friends. Mountains and waters are always connected, and people's hearts are closely linked. (New Society)
