In Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, it is summer in February, and 11 year old Olivia Pedroso and 13-year-old brother Samuel Pedroso are busy tidying up their "battle robes". The brother and sister put on Chinese style training clothes to welcome one of the most important festivals in their hearts - Chinese Spring Festival. On the evening of the 16th, the Chinese Association of Rio Grande do Sul held its first Spring Festival Gala, and the Pedroso siblings and their "Defense Martial Arts School" were invited to perform the opening performance of lion dance at the gala. I started practicing martial arts at the 'Defense Martial Arts School' founded by my parents when I was 5 years old. ”Olivia proudly said. The siblings are both members of the Brazilian national youth martial arts team. Although my younger sister is still young, she has gone through numerous battles and participated in more than 10 competitions. She also won the championship of the Brazilian youth group in 2023. Samuel, who has been practicing martial arts for 6 years, also won the Brazilian Mantis Boxing championship with his superb skills in the same year. This pair of "Kung Fu siblings" fell in love with Chinese martial arts under the influence of their parents. Their father Roberto and mother Silvia are respectively the president and vice president of the South Rio Grande Martial Arts Association. The couple founded the "Defense Martial Arts School" in 2016. Samuel said that initially he just thought his parents' martial arts training was cool, but as the training deepened, he gradually realized that Chinese Kung Fu is not just a martial art, but also contains rich cultural connotations. In school, he is like a little messenger spreading Chinese culture, often telling his classmates interesting stories about martial arts practice and inviting friends to watch his own competitions. The charm of Chinese Kung Fu has also earned him envy and respect among his peers, making more Brazilian children curious about distant Eastern countries. Last year, Olivia and Samuel embarked on their dream trip to China with their parents. From the hutongs in Beijing to the Shaolin Temple in Songshan, Henan, the ancient capital Luoyang, and the birthplace of Chen's Tai Chi in Chenjiagou, they participate in martial arts training and experience various traditional cultures in China. I not only learned Tai Chi in China, but also made many friends. Although we have language barriers, our shared interest in martial arts quickly made us good friends. So, in the future, I want to learn Chinese better. ”Olivia said. What moved me the most was the sunset at Shichahai in Beijing, it was so beautiful! ”Olivia recalled. Samuel, on the other hand, couldn't forget the magnificence of the Great Wall, and this journey gave him a vivid experience of China's history, music, and clothing. After returning to Brazil, the lives of the siblings also underwent changes. They started to insist on drinking Chinese tea, and both of them began to work hard to learn Chinese. Now, on their first Spring Festival after returning from China, they choose to spend it with local overseas Chinese and send their blessings with their exquisite Chinese martial arts. For the Pedro family, the Spring Festival is no longer a foreign holiday, but a part of family life. Although Brazil is in the midst of summer during the Spring Festival, which is different from China, it does not affect our celebration of this holiday at all, "Olivia said excitedly. Of course, what the siblings are most looking forward to is the "New Year's Eve dinner" after the celebration - dumplings, noodles, hot soup, and tofu. These authentic Chinese flavors are warm holiday memories in their hearts. I really enjoy eating dumplings. This year, we have been eating dumplings with many Chinese people. "After the performance, my sister thought that this year's dumplings were particularly delicious. I hope to go to China again this year and learn more. ”This is Olivia's New Year's wish. I hope our next trip to China goes smoothly and is even better. ”This is Samuel's expectation. (New Society)
