Can pathogenic bacteria invade plants and 'save themselves'? Chinese researchers discover synergistic disease resistance mechanism between bacteria and plants

The reporter learned from the Institute of Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences that recently, the Institute of Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, in collaboration with domestic universities, systematically revealed the common changes in the rhizosphere microbiome after pathogen invasion, and elucidated the mechanism by which root exudates such as tocopherols promote the enrichment of beneficial yellow bacteria. The soil borne wilt disease caused by Fusarium is known as the "plant cancer" of agricultural production, with a complex pathogenic mechanism and a global agricultural challenge. This study found that after the invasion of the pathogenic fungus Fusarium, the content of tocopherols in the root exudates of diseased plants significantly increased, which can promote the growth of beneficial yellow bacteria in the rhizosphere, resist the invasion of Fusarium, and act as a "self rescue" for plants. Further analysis shows that the combination of tocopherol and yellow bacteria can significantly reduce the incidence index of tomato wilt disease, while increasing the abundance of yellow bacteria in the rhizosphere. Industry experts believe that this study validates a new pathway for disease regulation through the synergistic effect of beneficial bacteria and root exudates, providing important theoretical basis for ecological prevention and control strategies for crop soil borne diseases. The international journal Nature Communications recently published relevant research results. (New Society)
