Dandelion Tank

2026-01-28

The "Dandelion Tank" is not a new model of tank, but a passive anti drone protection system called "Oduvanchik" (Russian for "dandelion") has been added to existing tanks, specifically designed to resist low altitude suicide drones. On the battlefield, suicide drones pose a huge threat to the survival of tanks. These suicide drones carry a fragmentation bomb or energy gathering warhead, which can deliver a fatal blow to tanks from the top of the turret or engine compartment. Statistics show that a large number of tanks lost by both sides of the conflict on the battlefield were hit by such suicide drones, with a higher proportion of artillery and armored vehicle losses. Later on, both sides of the conflict gradually built simple protective devices such as "sunshades" and "hedgehogs" for tanks, but these protective devices often weighed several tons, which not only increased the center of gravity of the vehicle and affected visibility, but also made disassembly and assembly difficult. So people turned their focus to the lighter "dandelion" protective system. The "Dandelion" protective system consists of many small devices that resemble dandelion seeds, each with a thick support rod at the bottom and fine branches branching out at the top. There is a layer of fine protective net between the support poles, which can wrap or wrap around the incoming suicide drone. The support rod and protective net are connected by quick release components, with a total weight of less than 400 kilograms, much lighter than the previous simple protective device, and easy to disassemble and assemble. It does not launch or interfere, and its mode of action is simple: by causing suicide drones to explode at a greater distance from the tank body, its lethality is reduced. Due to the extended distance, the debris rain generated by the suicide drone explosion will be dispersed, greatly weakening the energy and not causing serious damage to the tank armor locally. In actual combat tests, tank turrets equipped with this passive anti drone protection system withstood attacks from over a dozen suicide drones, leaving only shallow fragments of impact marks, while unprotected tank turrets were unable to withstand attacks from three suicide drones before being penetrated. Russian media reported that the "Dandelion" protection system "significantly extends the battlefield survival time of tanks", transforming the previous "one shot kill" of suicide drones on tanks into "multiple shot damage". However, the drawbacks of this system are also evident, with limited protection for tank tracks and bottoms, and almost ineffective against long-range precision strike weapons and anti tank missiles. Therefore, it is more like an "emergency" solution on the battlefield, fighting for interception time for active protection systems. In fact, whether it's the "sunshade", "hedgehog", or "dandelion", they are all practical products born from actual combat, demonstrating the development and changes of tank protection technology under new battlefield threats.
