Three Generations of Chinese Doctors Relay Aid to Africa: Let TCM acupuncture and moxibustion Accelerate "Going to Sea"

2026-01-26

"When I heard the patient's' thank you 'after receiving acupuncture and moxibustion treatment, I knew that this silver needle could not only cure the disease, but also speed up the acupuncture and moxibustion' going out to sea 'and build a bridge for cultural exchanges between China and Africa." After the severe cold, Zong Yi, a member of the 29th batch of Jiangxi medical team assisting Tunisia who returned to his hometown, looked at the letter of thanks sent to him by Tunisian patients and said frankly that he was warm in his heart. Zong Yi, born in a medical family, is the attending physician in the acupuncture and moxibustion Department of the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. His choice of medicine and foreign aid is inseparable from his family's inheritance. In 1973, Zong Yi's grandfather, as one of the first foreign medical aid team members from Jiangxi Province, went to Tunisia and sowed the seeds of traditional Chinese medicine on the distant land of Africa. In 2000, Zong Yi's father took part in the foreign aid medical cause and used acupuncture and moxibustion to relieve the pain of the local people in Tunisia. When I was a child, I grew up smelling the fragrance of traditional Chinese medicine prepared by my grandfather, and I often heard my father tell stories about how he treated patients in Tunisia. I hope to inherit my father's foreign aid medical career, which is a kind of inheritance. ”At the end of 2024, Zong Yi, as the leader of the acupuncture and moxibustion Detachment of the 29th batch of Jiangxi Medical Assistance Team to Tunisia, started the foreign aid medical work in Marsa Hospital in Tunisia. When he first arrived in Tunisia, Zong Yi found that the local people were curious about acupuncture and moxibustion. But trust is gradually established through successful treatments. Lingzong Yi was deeply impressed by a 19-year-old Tunisian girl who was studying dance. She suffered from cerebral hemorrhage, resulting in hemiplegia and even aphasia. After six months of illness, she was transferred to the Traditional Chinese Medicine Center of Massa Hospital. "At that time, she was very depressed and felt that her life was ruined." Zong Yi recalled that after a period of systematic acupuncture and moxibustion treatment, the girl's physical activity and language ability improved significantly, and she regained confidence in life. Later, she even joined the choir. The recognition rate for local Tunisian patients who have received treatment at our center is almost 100%. ”Despite the significant therapeutic effects and strong demand, Zong Yi is also aware of the challenges: the limited number of foreign aid doctors makes it difficult to meet all cooperation invitations, and how to make traditional Chinese medicine help more patients is a question he has been thinking about. Over the years, the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has been carrying out acupuncture and moxibustion teaching in Martha Hospital, and has provided training and issued certificates for more than 200 local medical staff. However, Zong Yi found that training often focused on theory, and clinical practice was a weak link. To this end, the medical team actively promoted and established the "Chinese medicine acupuncture and moxibustion clinical skills training center", which was officially unveiled in September 2025. The center will focus on strengthening clinical operation training to train local doctors who can carry out acupuncture and moxibustion diagnosis and treatment independently and normatively. "Our diagnosis and treatment alone will help the local people very little. If they can master acupuncture and moxibustion technology, they will be able to alleviate the pain of more patients. ”In Zong Yi's view, increasing training is the key to realizing the transformation from technical "blood transfusion" to self "hematopoiesis", and it is also an important step for China's acupuncture and moxibustion standards to "go global". From my grandfather's pioneering journey, my father's letter transmission, to the cultural exchange of Zong Yi's generation, the foreign aid environment and work priorities of the three generations have changed. Communication has shifted from overseas phone calls and letters to instant messaging software; The task has expanded from focusing on clinical practice to multicultural exchange. Zong Yi believes that the core of foreign medical aid has never changed: the spirit of fearlessness of hardship and willingness to contribute; The original intention of using benevolence and compassion to benefit the local people; And the sense of mission and friendship that spans mountains and seas, passed down from generation to generation. Yan Xiaojun, member of the Party Committee, Vice President, and Secretary of the Party Committee of the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, introduced that Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine will continue to promote the construction and development of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Center, work together with Tufang to promote the admission of traditional Chinese medicine, carry out research and development of herbal medicine in both regions, deepen personnel exchanges, strengthen traditional Chinese medicine technology training, and continuously inject new vitality into the improvement of medical and health capabilities in China and Tufang. A silver needle connects three generations of benevolent hearts; Countless patients witness the everlasting friendship. From treating illnesses and saving lives to cultural exchange, Zong Yi, along with his parents, ancestors, and all foreign medical aid providers, are interpreting the profound meaning of "boundless love" through their actions. They are steadily advancing the development of traditional Chinese medicine culture and building a community of human health and hygiene. (New Society)
