High quality development of ecological geology requires collaborative efforts

The high-level academic forum on ecological geology was recently held at Nankai University, where experts in scientific research, publishing, and other fields gathered to discuss and form a consensus: ecological geology is at a critical juncture of systematic and applied development. Only by making breakthroughs in theoretical innovation, discipline construction, and achievement transformation can we better meet the major strategic needs of the country and provide solid disciplinary support for the construction of ecological civilization. Ecological geology is an emerging branch of geology that mainly studies the ecological functions and formation laws of the lithosphere. As an interdisciplinary field, the core value of ecological geology lies in solving complex problems in the Earth system and supporting the implementation of key strategies. Liu Jiaqi, an academician of the CAS Member, pointed out from the macro perspective of the evolution of the earth system that achieving the goal of "double carbon" is not only a technical issue, but also a complex system engineering involving the coupling of multiple elements of the earth. Ecological geology can help people understand the carrying capacity of ecosystems from the macro scale of Earth system evolution, providing scientific support for achieving the "dual carbon" goal. Professor Zhou Qixing from Nankai University said in reviewing the development of the discipline that ecological geology was born in an era where resource, environmental, and ecological issues were increasingly prominent. At present, disciplines are facing challenges such as blurred boundaries and inconsistent research paradigms. It is urgent to make efforts at the top-level design level to build a stable and open discipline system with Chinese characteristics. He proposed that the future development of disciplines should not only improve the theoretical system, but also strengthen the deep integration with fields such as environmental science and life science, and enhance the ability to solve complex ecological problems. Talent cultivation is the key to the stable and far-reaching development of disciplines. Associate Professor Bao Yanyu of Nankai University, based on teaching practice, said that a considerable proportion of students studying courses related to ecological geology have entered top universities at home and abroad for further studies, and have grown into research and technical backbones in related fields, reflecting the effectiveness of disciplinary training. Experts attending the meeting generally believe that only by building a solid foundation of talent can there be sustained motivation for disciplinary innovation and development. Resolving development challenges and promoting disciplinary upgrading require collaborative efforts from multiple parties. Among them, at the level of achievement transformation, the attending experts proposed that some research results are still at the theoretical level, and it is necessary to promote the practical application of research results and enhance the support ability of disciplines for major ecological and environmental issues through the joint construction of scientific research platforms and the establishment of industry university research docking mechanisms.
