How artificial intelligence reshapes the underlying logic of education

2026-01-20

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has impacted the way humans work and live, and is profoundly affecting many industries. The prosperity of technology leads to the prosperity of the nation, and a strong education leads to a strong country. Faced with the astonishing speed of AI breakthroughs, the entire education sector is increasingly aware that a profound transformation is imperative. The "Outline of the Plan for Building an Education Strong Country (2024-2035)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Outline") proposes to "promote artificial intelligence to assist education reform", which is not only an active response to the international trend of education development, but also a strategic plan for China's modernization of education, and a forward-looking layout for education reform in the era of artificial intelligence. Based on the national conditions of our country and the deployment of the Outline, we can clearly see that the mismatch contradiction between the education system and socio-economic development has also been amplified by technological acceleration, forcing us to re-examine the underlying logic of education: what is the future paradigm of education? What should we teach, how should we teach, and who should teach? Looking ahead to the intelligent society landscape: the new reality facing education. With the acceleration of big language models towards universal reasoning and embodied intelligence, their application in education is also exponentially improving. Faced with changes in the education sector, it may be one of the most fundamental changes that AI brings to the future of human society. However, what is the value of such a transformation? Firstly, we need to assess the social landscape shaped by future intelligent technologies and examine the potential and risks of existing AI education applications. Although it is difficult to accurately predict the specific nodes of technological breakthroughs, it can be predicted that the progressiveness and popularity of intelligent technology will bring at least the following three profound impacts when building China into an educational power by 2035. Firstly, a large number of routine "white-collar jobs" with rules and regulations will be replaced. In August 2025, the "Opinions of the State Council on Deepening the Implementation of the" Artificial Intelligence+"Action" proposed to create more intelligent work methods, explore new organizational structures and management models for human-machine collaboration, and cultivate and develop innovative work forms such as intelligent agents. This means that future work is no longer simply about "machines replacing humans", but about deep collaboration and complementary advantages between humans and AI. In this context, human creativity and systematic innovation ability have become increasingly important. Secondly, following industrial automation, embodied intelligence will replace many service industry positions, such as drivers, couriers, and some domestic and catering service personnel. The human demand for labor may shift towards the embodiment of the value of life and the pursuit of the way of existence. Finally, everyone will have multiple cost-effective intelligent agents based on personal preferences, providing customized services for learning, work, life, and other aspects. As "AI natives," the post-20s may even develop emotional identification with intelligent agents and view them as important partners in their daily lives. However, with the application of AI, new challenges have emerged one after another: globally, the phenomenon of students using large models to complete essays, papers, and other tasks continues to spark academic ethical controversies; While students use large models to efficiently complete tasks, they also fall into the confusion of not being able to understand the content written by AI, exposing the risk of cognitive decoupling. Undoubtedly, education will face a 'temptation of mediocrity', where students may become more polarized due to differences in learning motivation and perseverance. In addition, education is the fundamental symbol that distinguishes humans from other organisms, and it is the wisdom that contemporary people spend a lot of energy cultivating the next generation. But if this process is completely replaced by AI, civilization will experience a hiatus, and human civilization will undoubtedly be greatly impacted. From this, it can be seen that the impact of AI on education is not only the selection of methods, technological paths, and application scenarios for educational transformation, but more importantly, the challenge to the underlying logic of knowledge concepts, educational values, etc. It will update educational goals, objects, and methods, giving opportunities for educational reshaping and providing unlimited imagination for future educational landscapes. Reshaping the three underlying logics: returning to the essence of education. Faced with the empowerment and coercion brought by artificial intelligence, education must return to its essence for reconstruction. Education is a social activity that cultivates people. It is a purposeful, planned, and organized way to exert positive influence on the physical and mental health of learners, covering the dual mission of "teaching" (imparting knowledge and skills) and "nurturing" (nurturing mental character). It has three major functions: personal growth, socialization, and cultural inheritance and innovation. Although there is a consensus on the value of education, it has long been constrained by practical factors, and artificial intelligence is expected to reshape education from three levels: resource logic, information logic, and value logic. One is resource logic: from "zero sum allocation" to "symbiotic sharing". China's education has long faced the contradiction between the limited availability of high-quality educational resources (especially high-quality teachers) and the urgent need for high-quality development of education. Firstly, the class based teaching system has efficiency bottlenecks in personalized support. Secondly, the professionalism of teaching also makes it difficult for high-quality educational resources such as teachers and courses to flow out at low cost. Currently, teaching agents based on large models can carry and disseminate some of the teaching abilities of excellent teachers at low cost, and provide personalized support through real-time dialogue, diagnosis, and feedback, thereby improving learning efficiency and effectiveness. This can not only radiate high-quality resources to weak schools and students with more tutoring needs, but also liberate teachers from repetitive labor and create conditions for their role transformation into learning designers and guides. Based on the collaborative sharing mechanism of the multi-agent learning platform at Tsinghua University, the innovative potential of teachers is further stimulated, and the overall level of the teaching staff is also improved through new research and resource sharing. The allocation of educational resources may shift from a "zero sum game" model based on hierarchical allocation to a "symbiotic" model based on intelligent teaching collaboration. The second is information logic: from "diploma signal" to "competency based". The key qualities of talents, such as character and creativity, are difficult to accurately evaluate in a short period of time, which has led to a long-term over reliance on the screening signals of educational diplomas in China's education system, which in turn leads to a strong screening mechanism and exam pressure in the education system. The application of AI has brought new developments to educational evaluation, but it has also brought new challenges. On the one hand, continuous multimodal learning process analysis conducted through AI technology can achieve more evidence-based and accurate evaluation of learners' abilities and literacy. This helps to build a new talent evaluation system, thereby weakening the reliance on a single diploma, alleviating the screening anxiety of the education system from the root, and promoting education to return to the original intention of educating people. On the other hand, education is no longer about enabling students to acquire more knowledge, but about cultivating more diverse thinking in them. In this way, there must be new evaluation standards, evaluation tools, evaluation methods, etc., to guide education towards a direction that is both based on knowledge as a carrier and goes beyond knowledge, evaluating students' creativity, critical thinking, teamwork, and ability to solve complex problems. The third is the logic of value: from "instrumental rationality" to "human return". The value of education is undoubtedly to cultivate people. However, in educational practice, instrumental rationality often overrides value rationality, emphasizing cognition over emotion, scores over literacy, and not to mention cultural nourishment and inheritance, leading to modernity crises such as "involution" and "lying flat", individualism, and increased psychological problems. With the widespread application of AI, the disruptive changes in the future employment structure will force us to reorder the value of education. Society will have more motivation and more ease in prioritizing the shaping of students' character, spiritual cultivation, and cultural inheritance. The humanistic cultivation of teachers as "big masters" is becoming increasingly important. Based on a scientific grasp and continuous research on the laws of talent growth, schools and families can also have more determination to adopt more inclusive and long-term student evaluation methods, create a good educational ecology, help every child grow up healthily, and enable outstanding talents to stand out more and better. In this sense, education has returned to its original intention and origin: not only imparting knowledge, but also cultivating people with creativity, imagination, perseverance, empathy, and a sense of responsibility to adapt to future challenges and promote the progress of human society. Outline the future educational paradigm: The core direction and path are reshaped based on the above logic, and the outline of the future educational paradigm is gradually becoming clear. One is the change in purpose: humanistic literacy has become the core. In the era of intelligence, the essential difference between humans and machines is even more important, and it is necessary to enrich the unique humanistic spirit and real experience of humanity. And this will force education to emphasize more on comprehensive personality development, value shaping, and creativity cultivation, committed to cultivating lifelong learners who are spiritually rich, physically and mentally healthy, and love life. Deep reading and social practice will become key approaches. Cultivate thinking, cultivate character, strengthen empathy, and inherit civilization through in-depth reading; Social practice is the process of constructing value identity and connecting the world through real social experiences, observations, and problem-solving. The second is the change in mode: personalized popularization and teacher transformation. On the basis of value guidance, personalized learning based on high-quality intelligent resources will become the norm. The innovative exploration on the front line indicates that the learning of a large amount of deterministic knowledge can be independently or collaboratively completed by students with the assistance of teaching agents. Speculative and humanistic knowledge learning is still encouraged through reading, dialogue, and other methods. Teachers' energy is more focused on personalized guidance, motivation, and design guidance for project-based learning and practical activities. Problem driven interdisciplinary learning will be easier to achieve with technological support. Intelligent resources will promote the integration of school education and lifelong education system, blurring the boundaries of academic stages and making the educational system more flexible. After completing basic education, students can flexibly switch between university studies and employment based on their abilities and interests. The personal charm of teachers, their care and dedication to students, and their insights and creativity beyond artificial intelligence will be the key to winning students' trust. The third is the change in positioning: teaching students according to their aptitude and hierarchical cultivation. With the continuous popularization of AI, everyone will have the opportunity and ability to use AI, which prompts more attention to individual differences in "what to teach" and differentiation based on training positioning: talents dedicated to basic theory or disruptive innovation need to have a solid grasp of core knowledge and logic in their field, and possess noble character pursuits, striving to defend human civilization and subjectivity; Talents oriented towards application innovation should place greater emphasis on grasping disciplinary thinking and evaluation standards, and devote more time to understanding and creating value in the real world. Artificial intelligence is quietly reshaping the fundamental logic of education, presenting both opportunities and challenges. We should adopt a positive and cautious attitude, actively engage in systematic innovation and evidence-based exploration, and build a new educational paradigm that is future oriented and people-oriented.
