The impressive performance report reflects the continuous optimization of foreign trade structure

2026-01-20

According to the latest data from the General Administration of Customs, the total import and export value of China's goods trade exceeded 45 trillion yuan for the first time in 2025, reaching 45.47 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.8%, continuing the new record of continuous growth for 9 years. Currently, against the backdrop of rising global economic instability and continuous restructuring of international supply chains, this achievement is hard won, reflecting the quality improvement and structural optimization of China's foreign trade development, as well as the strategic determination and institutional advantages of China in accelerating the construction of a new development pattern and promoting high-level opening up to the outside world. From the perspective of structural changes, the driving force of China's foreign trade growth is undergoing a profound transformation. In 2025, foreign trade growth will no longer rely on traditional factor inputs and low-cost advantages, and structural factors such as technological density, brand influence, and supply chain organizational capabilities will become more prominent. The export of "new three types" products increased by 27.1% year-on-year, high-tech products increased by 13.2%, independent brand products increased by 12.9%, and smart terminals sold well in more than 170 countries and regions. The accelerated upgrading of export structure reflects the overall leap of innovation driven capability of Chinese enterprises, and also indicates that China is forming a scale advantage in new tracks such as green low-carbon and intelligent manufacturing. Enterprises are more sensitive to tracking global demand trends, more timely in adjusting product structures, and more accurate in identifying supply chain risks, which further enhances China's position in the global value chain. This structural upgrade is not only a key source for maintaining the resilience of foreign trade operations, but also a concentrated manifestation of the coordinated promotion of the development of new quality productive forces in the fields of industrial system, technological innovation, and open cooperation. The continuous increase in the contribution of high-tech, green products, and independent brands to the growth of foreign trade indicates that the autonomy, adaptability, and stability of China's supply chain system are continuously strengthening, and the sustainability of foreign trade growth has significantly improved, laying a solid foundation for the high-quality development of foreign trade during the 15th Five Year Plan period. From the perspective of external cooperation, the breadth and depth of China's foreign trade network continue to expand. In 2025, China will maintain trade exchanges with 249 countries and regions, and trade with ASEAN will exceed trillion dollars, trade with Central Asia will exceed 100 billion dollars for the first time, and import and export to countries along the "the Belt and Road" will increase by 6.3%. As an important hub for opening up to the outside world, the foreign trade scale of 9 cities in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area has exceeded 9 trillion yuan, further strengthening China's role as a node in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and even the global trade network, providing important support for deepening regional cooperation and stabilizing industrial and supply chains. A wider coverage and more balanced structure of open cooperation is taking shape, and the trading partner system presents the characteristics of multi center, multi-level, and multi-directional. The significance of this cooperation pattern lies not only in expanding market space, but also in enhancing the structural security of the foreign trade system. Against the backdrop of differentiated external demand and tightening trade policies in some developed economies, a diversified market layout can effectively diversify risks and avoid structural dependence on a single market. At the same time, cooperation with emerging market economies continues to deepen, and trade relations are expanding from one-way exchange to industrial chain collaboration, infrastructure interconnection, digital trade, and green development cooperation, presenting stronger complementarity and sustainability. By 2025, China's imports from over 130 countries and regions will increase, indicating that China is not only an important force in global manufacturing, but also a significant source of global demand. This provides a realistic path for promoting more countries to integrate into the global supply chain system and improve the global development network. From the perspective of institutional environment, the improvement of foreign trade resilience is closely related to the deepening of institutional openness. By 2025, there will be over 780000 business entities with import and export performance in China, with private enterprises experiencing a 7.1% increase in imports and exports, and foreign-funded enterprises maintaining growth for seven consecutive quarters. Accelerate the implementation of institutional arrangements such as trade facilitation reform, port clearance optimization, and innovative regulatory models. Measures such as "Combination Port", "One Port Connect", and "Two Step Declaration" have significantly reduced institutional costs, and the new regulatory model provides a more efficient institutional channel for new industries and products to enter the international market; The further improvement of export credit insurance and overseas financial service systems has enhanced the ability of enterprises to participate in global competition. The continuous deepening of institutional openness not only enhances the transparency, stability, and predictability of the trade environment, but also strengthens China's ability to connect with high standard economic cooperation rules. More importantly, with the continuous improvement of China's industrial system, market size, and technological capabilities, foreign trade is playing an increasingly important role in the field of global governance. Stable manufacturing and supply capabilities are important pillars of the global industrial chain; Green products and solutions provide more choices for the global energy transition; The popularization of digital trade platforms enables small and medium-sized enterprises from more countries to enter the global market at lower costs; Expanding imports to developing countries can help enhance their development capabilities and international cooperation level. Foreign trade is becoming an important carrier for China to implement global governance initiatives, promote high-level opening-up, and build an open world economy. Through the construction of public goods supply and cooperation platforms, it injects new impetus into international cooperation. Overall, the 2025 foreign trade data is not only an economic report, but also a concentrated reflection of China's comprehensive leap in structural upgrading, cooperation extension, and institutional innovation. At a critical stage of profound restructuring of the global economic and trade pattern, China's foreign trade system is forming a more resilient, stable, and spillover value structural force. This year marks the beginning of the 15th Five Year Plan, and facing the instability of the external environment, China's foreign trade still has deep support for stability and improvement. China's comprehensive advantages in terms of system supply, market scale, industrial system and talent structure are accelerating to transform into the practical ability to stabilize foreign trade and promote opening up. This is not only an important practical achievement of the Chinese path to modernization road in the field of foreign trade, but also an important strategic support for China to continue to promote high-level opening up and improve foreign trade resilience and competitiveness during the "15th Five Year Plan" period.
