The 'unique rebirth' of ancient weaving machines

On a winter afternoon, the warm sun shines lightly, and the Dabie Mountains seem to be draped in a layer of golden veil. Crunching, creaking... In Changsheng Street, Qiliping Town, Hong'an County, Hubei Province, one of the birthplaces of the Huangma Uprising, the sound of machinery and bamboo could be heard leisurely from the small courtyard at the end of the street. Following the sound, eight old wooden weaving machines were neatly arranged inside the house, and two weavers, one old and one young, were engrossed in their busy work, skillfully and accurately lifting the warp and dropping the shuttle. This is our newly designed pattern, used on handmade scarves that young people love. ”Tao Wencheng, who has become the inheritor of traditional textile skills in Hong'an Dabu, said that the elder weaver is his mother, Huang Zhenlan, a representative inheritor of intangible cultural heritage from the previous generation, and the younger one is his wife. The two are rushing to produce a new batch of Dabu products. These days, Tao Wencheng is particularly happy. The 1600 square meter Hong'an Big Cloth Industrialization Demonstration and Research Base, which he has been preparing for for a long time, has officially opened. The new site has more than 40 weaving machines and has attracted more than 100 left behind women around Changsheng Street. Wenchengya, you should come back. Mom is very worried now. If this good craft is lost, she won't be willing to let it go! ”35 year old Tao Wencheng learned from his mother's tone when she urged him to return to his hometown many years ago, with a hint of innocence in his laughter. During the years when he worked in Wuhan, his mother always talked about it. After graduating from Wuhan Textile University in 2011, Tao Wencheng, like most young people, chose to stay in the city to work. Cultural inheritance is a glorious thing, and our hometown needs young people to come back and build. "Liu Wei, the director of Hong'an County Cultural Center, echoed and persuaded Tao Wencheng, ultimately making up his mind to return home. In 2015, Tao Wencheng returned to his hometown and, together with his mother and wife, established a 60 square meter training center on Changsheng Street. At the beginning of entrepreneurship, the steps were difficult. After understanding the situation, the county provided them with a free 800 square meter intangible cultural heritage protection and inheritance site, assisted in registering trademarks, and helped apply for special loans. Looking back at the ten-year journey of inheritance and entrepreneurship, Tao Wencheng is deeply moved: "With the guidance and support of the government, as well as the perseverance and struggle of the family, the interweaving of latitude and longitude, the golden shuttle and the silver shuttle, has woven today's good days." Tao Wencheng knows in his heart that the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage cannot rely solely on emotions. After learning his mother's textile skills, he applied the mechanical knowledge he learned in college to make some "non damaging" improvements to the old loom, improving production efficiency. He often goes out of Hong'an to participate in various exhibitions. He actively applied for the off the job training organized by his alma mater. Intangible cultural heritage skills cannot just lie in museums. ”Tao Wencheng said. In 2024, he brought his own designed and produced Hong'an fabric products to the stage of Beijing 798 International Fashion Week. The "China-Chic" big cloth clothing, which is produced by the collision of traditional patterns and modern design, has attracted attention since its appearance. Many designers took the initiative to help him connect with overseas sales channels, which doubled his confidence. In recent years, Tao Wencheng's big cloth business has become increasingly prosperous, with products covering more than 20 categories such as clothing, bedding, cultural and creative products, and mounting calligraphy and painting. To highlight the local red cultural heritage, he also spent ten days weaving well-known revolutionary songs into handmade works. This is not embroidery or jacquard, but directly weaving the words into the fabric. ”Tao Wencheng said that weaving the magnificent red history of his hometown into the thread of intangible cultural heritage is also a form of inheritance. Nowadays, on Changsheng Street, almost all 15 fabric stores are selling Tao Wencheng's large fabric products. A handmade scarf is priced at 180 to 200 yuan, but it is still in short supply. His family's large cloth sales account for one-third of the local market share in Hong'an, with an annual revenue of nearly 6 million yuan. The most reassuring thing for Tao Wencheng is that the workshop also promotes employment for left behind women in the surrounding areas. Skilled female workers can earn around 200 yuan per day, and their fellow villagers can increase their income at their doorstep. While creating large fabric products that combine natural materials, handmade warmth, and cultural sentiment, one can also root and start businesses in their hometown side by side with their family. Tao Wencheng thinks that compared to his classmates who work in big cities, his path is also "quite impressive and fragrant". The sound of pine waves echoes the ancient charm, and the sea of clouds surges into a new chapter. Crunch, crunch... From this end of the street, a new sound of intangible cultural heritage of Dabu can be heard; At the other end of the street, there are revolutionary relics that witness the turbulent years. History and modernity blend together in the 'Red Army Street', forming a solid and warm accompaniment on the road to revitalizing the revolutionary old areas of the Dabie Mountains. (New Society)
