The Spring Festival of the Year of the Horse is approaching, and new discoveries have been made of Warring States bamboo slips stored in Tsinghua University. The Research and Protection Center for Excavated Documents at Tsinghua University has newly compiled 5 bamboo books related to horses, which are the earliest and most valuable written materials in China that systematically discuss the study of horses, their healing, training, and control. They are of great significance for the research of the history of science and culture in the pre Qin period. This was learned by the reporter on January 19th from the press conference of "Tsinghua University's Collection of Warring States Bamboo Slips (Fifteen)" and the series of achievements in proofreading and English translation held by Tsinghua University. Professor Huang Dekuan, Director of the Research and Protection Center for Excavated Documents at Tsinghua University, introduced that the "Tsinghua University Collection of Warring States Bamboo Slips (Fifteen)" includes five unprecedented documents related to horses. Among them, the chapter "Xu Ma" focuses on the art of horse identification, elaborating on the morphological characteristics of twelve types of horses to clarify their identification criteria; The book 'Diseases of Horses' systematically records various diseases and their symptoms in horses; The article "Training Horses" summarizes the relationship between different horse training methods and diet, and improves horsepower by combining domestication with maintaining the health of horses; The article "Yu Shu" comprehensively introduces how to control horses based on their body movements, filling the gap in ancient Chinese literature on horse riding techniques; The book 'The Way of Riding Horses' mainly discusses the way of riding horses and compares it to' governing the country and herdsmen '. The latest achievements in the proofreading and English translation of "Tsinghua Bamboo Slips" have also been released simultaneously. Among them, the "Tsinghua University Collection Warring States Bamboo Slips Proofreading" plan plans to publish a total of 18 volumes. Based on the latest research progress, the commentaries will be revised and annotated, and the difficult and difficult bamboo books will be translated into plain and easy to understand vernacular Chinese for popularization and promotion to the public. At present, the series has published 8 volumes. In 2008, nearly 2500 precious bamboo slips from the Warring States period were collected at Tsinghua University and referred to as "Tsinghua slips" by the academic community. Since then, Tsinghua University has been conducting research on them. Since the release of the first research results in 2011, the school has released an annual report on the compilation of "Tsinghua Bamboo Slips". Currently, 15 volumes have been published, covering classics and historical texts, political books, astronomical numerology, and other literature. The domestication of horses, the introduction of high-quality breeds, the accumulation of grazing experience, and the improvement of driving skills are directly related to the enhancement of ancient transportation and warfare capabilities, and have had an important impact on the exchange and development of ancient civilizations. Huang Dekuan introduced that besides the Book of Rites, there are extremely scarce records of the relationship between horses and the pre Qin period in passed down literature. The new discovery of this batch of Chu bamboo slips is currently the earliest systematic written material on horse riding, horse healing, horse training, and horse control in the pre Qin period. It has important literary value for studying horse riding techniques, animal husbandry history, animal archaeology, veterinary history, and other aspects of the Warring States period. (New Society)
