Yangzhou China Grand Canal Museum: Bringing Moving Culture to the Public's Eyes

2026-01-14

On the banks of the Sanwan Ancient Canal and within the Grand Canal National Cultural Park in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, the Yangzhou China Grand Canal Museum (hereinafter referred to as the "China Grand Canal Museum") has rightfully become a popular destination for young people to check in, for students to study, and for the public to experience the culture of the Grand Canal. Yangzhou, the first specialized museum in China to comprehensively showcase the culture of the Grand Canal, is a famous historical and cultural city in China. Its role in history and cultural development are mainly attributed to the excavation and operation of the Grand Canal. Yangzhou is located in Jiangkou, connecting Luoyang to the west, the Land Silk Road, the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea to the east, and the Maritime Silk Road. It is an important intersection of the "the Belt and Road". Not only that, Yangzhou has also witnessed the complete process of the origin, development, prosperity, and even changes of the Grand Canal in China. In 2018, Zhongyun Expo officially launched its planning and construction under the coordinated promotion of Jiangsu Province and Yangzhou City. Since its inception, the project has been positioned as a cultural project at the national strategic level, with key planning by the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and Government, construction of the museum in Yangzhou, and specific exhibition and operation work undertaken by the Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism. With the joint efforts of all parties, the museum laid the foundation and started construction in 2019. After two years of efficient promotion, it overcame multiple difficulties and successively completed key links such as planning and design, engineering construction, and exhibition bidding. In November 2020, the main body of the museum was completed and officially named "Yangzhou China Grand Canal Museum" with the approval of the State Council. In June 2021, Zhongyun Expo was successfully completed and opened to the public. The top-level design of Zhongyun Expo has clearly defined its strategic positioning as an important component of the "Grand Canal National Cultural Park" from the planning stage. Under the guidance of this strategy, the planning and construction of Zhongyun Expo closely adheres to the core requirements of "protecting, inheriting, and utilizing" the cultural heritage of the Grand Canal, and strives to create an important platform for showcasing the overall value of the Grand Canal culture and promoting regional cultural coordinated development. As the first modern comprehensive canal themed museum in China that integrates cultural relic protection, scientific research exhibition, and social education, Zhongyun Museum is a demonstrative project of the integration of culture and tourism in the new era and the construction of the Grand Canal cultural belt. It not only creates a new type of "museum within the national cultural park", but also the first thematic museum in China to comprehensively display the culture of the Grand Canal. Unlike previous regional and single perspective displays, Zhongyun Expo has achieved breakthroughs in the entire basin, all time period, and multiple perspectives, systematically presenting the overall historical context of the Grand Canal and completing a three-dimensional interpretation of its history and culture. The permanent exhibition of the Grand Canal Culture in China focuses on the "Grand Canal" as the core, connecting the historical and contemporary values of the canal. In terms of basic display, the three distinctive exhibitions of "The Grand Canal - China's World Cultural Heritage", "Boats on the Canal", and "Impressions of the Grand Canal Street" constitute the main narrative of the Grand Canal culture; The special exhibition focuses on different "slices" of the Grand Canal culture, such as "world-renowned canals and canal cities", to explore the cultural diversity and commonalities of the Grand Canal on a global scale. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, we continue to launch temporary exhibitions around the theme of the canal, gradually forming five mature temporary exhibition systems: "Canal City", "Canal Intangible Cultural Heritage", "Canal Art", "Cultural Heritage", and "World Civilization". Among them, the "Canal City" exhibition uses regional identity to evoke emotional resonance among the audience; The exhibitions of "Cultural Heritage" and "Canal Intangible Cultural Heritage" enhance interaction and participation through dynamic display; The exhibitions of "Canal Art" and "World Civilization" provide diverse artistic and cultural perspectives to meet the aesthetic and cognitive needs of different audiences. The periodic updates of the five major systems have formed the attraction of "constantly seeing and constantly updating". Starting with "zero collections", since its establishment, Zhongyun Expo has focused on the historical context of the Grand Canal, focusing on improving the exhibition system and deepening the theme narrative, and continuously carrying out special cultural relic collection. At present, the collection of cultural relics has exceeded 16000 pieces, covering ancient books and documents, calligraphy and painting, inscriptions, ceramics, metal objects, etc., fully presenting the cultural diversity of the Grand Canal. At the same time, actively promoting the digital archiving and refined management of collections, orderly advancing the work of cultural relics inventory archiving, and providing a reliable physical basis for subsequent research and dissemination; To ensure the safety of cultural relics and complete the project of upgrading the collection warehouse, Zhongyun Expo was awarded the title of "Gold Medal Warehouse" at the 3rd Jiangsu Provincial Museum with professional temperature and humidity control, security monitoring and other facilities. We have always been driven by scientific research, systematically promoting the protection and revitalization of the cultural heritage of the Grand Canal. Through hosting the National Social Science Fund's major special project "Research on Historical Experience and Innovative Models of the Protection, Inheritance and Utilization of the Grand Canal Cultural Heritage", we have deeply involved in the design and practice of multiple cultural relic protection projects, and focused on maintaining the original state and historical context of cultural relics in the restoration process. On this basis, through various forms of achievements such as academic monographs, technical patents, and research papers, Zhongyun Bo has gradually constructed a cultural relic protection chain from protection practice to academic research, and then to value dissemination. We are committed to systematically decoding the connotation of the cultural heritage of the Grand Canal and endowing it with the possibility of contemporary translation through innovative academic frameworks. This system provides a solid endogenous driving force and theoretical foundation for promoting the inheritance of the cultural heritage of the Grand Canal in the long river of time. Zhongyun Expo fully utilizes the resources and collection characteristics of the museum, deeply extracts the unique aesthetic and spiritual value of cultural relics, and actively explores the creative transformation path of cultural relics in the contemporary context. We deeply analyze the culture of the Grand Canal, combine the elements of the collection with the linear culture of the canal, and develop a series of products such as "Silk Road Canal" and "Dian Chai Li Guan", covering 10 categories including stationery, toys, clothing, precious metals, and food; And in conjunction with the temporary exhibitions in the museum, the exhibition will be combined with consumption. For example, during the "George Morandi" exhibition, Morandi series cultural and creative products such as canvas bags and refrigerator stickers will be launched, which are both practical and artistic. Through independent development of cultural and creative industries, we connect the cultural heritage of the Grand Canal with contemporary lifestyles, integrating traditional meanings into public life in a novel, dynamic, and fashionable form. Make the culture of the Grand Canal more deeply rooted in people's hearts. During the 14th Five Year Plan period, the China International Import Expo has been safely open for more than 1200 days, receiving over 15 million visitors and ranking among the top museums in China in terms of normalized reservation for visits. In order to better serve the audience, we have improved our reception capacity by optimizing the tour route, extending opening hours, and setting up special services. With rich exhibition content and interactive experiences, we enable the audience not only to "come in", but also to "stay" and "take out", achieving effective integration between cultural services and public needs. The uniqueness of Zhongyun Expo lies not only in the national strategic carrier of "Grand Canal National Cultural Park", but also in its breakthrough of the boundaries of traditional museums, differentiated sustainable exhibition system, and deep integration of digital technology display strategy, transforming the Grand Canal cultural lineage into immersive experiences. Through sustainable narrative updates and deep empowerment of digital interaction, Zhongyun Expo attempts to build a public cultural field that can both look back on history and respond to contemporary life. We hope to empower through deep integration of culture and tourism, create an immersive and exhibition oriented non legacy cultural innovation model, and provide visitors with a cultural experience that integrates education, service, viewing, amusement, and leisure. In order to effectively connect history and contemporary times, and deepen the public dissemination of Grand Canal culture, China International Import Expo has constructed a full media communication system, forming a communication pattern of "exhibition activity media product" linkage, and coordinating different dimensions of Grand Canal cultural dissemination with systematic thinking. Not long ago, China National Radio and Television conducted an in-depth report on the China National Museum of Sport, presenting the practical path of museums to make history "live" in the present and culture "warm" in the heart. At the same time, we continue to carry out a series of communication projects such as online cloud exhibitions, short video programs, and cultural and creative collaborations, with an average annual new media reach of over ten million people, gradually building a distinctive and infectious cultural communication brand for the Grand Canal. Various innovative measures have enabled Zhongyun Expo to rapidly grow into a tourist destination with an annual reception of over 5 million people and a new cultural and tourism landmark. It has been awarded more than 50 national and provincial-level honors, including "National Model Collective for Ethnic Unity and Progress", "National First level Museum", and "National Most Innovative Museum". It has also received 4 international honors, such as the "Star of Excellence Award for Global World Heritage Education Innovation Cases" and "Best Case of Global Cultural Heritage Utilization", from UNESCO. These achievements not only affirm our past exploration, but also point us in the direction of continuous progress. Standing at the new starting point of the 15th Five Year Plan, Zhongyun Expo will continue to construct a narrative scene of the Grand Canal culture from a systematic and innovative perspective, adhering to the principles of using cultural figures, exhibitions to convey the spirit, and emotions to move people, continuously expanding the educational function, dissemination power, and social value of the museum. As a national window that presents the historical context, cultural connotations, and contemporary values of the Grand Canal in a panoramic manner, we will continue to explore the practical path of "protection, inheritance, and utilization", and promote the Grand Canal culture towards a broader public view and international stage with a more open attitude, more vivid ways, and more innovative expressions.
