On the 10th, the reporter learned from the joint archaeological team of Fergana Luoyang and China Uzbekistan that the archaeological team discovered a section of ancient city wall at the Kuwa ancient city site in Uzbekistan, which lasted from the 3rd century BC to the 10th century AD, spanning about 1300 years. This discovery provides key physical evidence for the study of the evolution of the ancient city along the Silk Road and the cultural exchanges between East and West, and is an important achievement of international archaeological cooperation under the framework of the "the Belt and Road" initiative. The site of the ancient city of Kuwa is located in the Ferghana Basin in eastern Uzbekistan, with an existing area of about 110000 square meters. The region is an important hub of the ancient Silk Road and its historical roots with China can be traced back to more than two thousand years ago. The "Dawan Kingdom" recorded by Zhang Qian during his visit to the Western Regions in the Han Dynasty is located here. In 2023, the Archaeological Research Institute of Luoyang City, Henan Province and Fergana University in Uzbekistan jointly formed a joint archaeological team to conduct archaeological exploration of the ancient city of Kuwa site. According to Liu Bin, the Chinese leader of the joint archaeological team, relics such as palaces, city gates, city walls, house sites, streets, and handicraft workshops have been discovered within the site. In 2025, the joint archaeological team conducted key excavations in the north gate of the main city of the site and the moat area north of it through systematic layout of exploration sites. According to Xinhua News Agency, excavations have shown that the area around the north gate of the ancient city of Kuwa has a complex accumulation and has lasted for a long time. The structure and function have undergone multiple renovations, using two different building materials: clay bricks and mud bricks. ”Liu Bin stated that it is preliminarily judged that the earliest wall in the north gate area of the ancient city of Kuwa was from the Parthian period, with walls from the Dawan and Sogdian periods in between, and the latest wall from the Samanid period, which was used from the 3rd century BC to the 10th century AD. Liu Bin introduced that as the location of the "Dawan Kingdom" recorded by Zhang Qian, the long-term use and multiple reconstructions of the city walls of Kuwa Ancient City reveal the enduring vitality, adaptability, and complex functions of this Silk Road hub city. In addition, the evolution of wall building technology is also an important material for studying the construction techniques, material selection, and possible cultural influences and dissemination paths behind different periods of architecture. It is reported that the joint archaeological team also conducted a systematic investigation and exploration of the eastern area of the palace district in the main city of Kuwa Ancient City, and discovered relics such as the foundation trench of the city wall and the outer moat, providing key information for the restoration of the overall layout of the ancient city. Liu Bin stated that this year he plans to carry out systematic excavation work in the palace area to further clarify the complete layout and functional zoning of the ancient city. (New Society)
