The continuous improvement of national physical fitness reflects the effectiveness of China's construction of health

2026-01-07

Recently, the General Administration of Sport of China released the "Sixth National Physical Fitness Monitoring Bulletin", which showed that the proportion of Chinese citizens with "qualified" or above physical fitness (pass rate) reached 84.9%, and the proportion of people with "good" or above physical fitness (excellent rate) was 30.9%. Compared with 2020, the overall physical fitness pass rate in China will increase by 0.8 percentage points and the excellent rate will increase by 1.5 percentage points in 2025, maintaining a steady upward trend since 2000. This is not only a leap in numbers, but also a vivid footnote to the implementation of the Healthy China strategy, and a clear indication of the improvement of people's livelihood and well-being. In recent years, the physical fitness level of the Chinese people has steadily improved. From a group perspective, "one elderly and one young" has become a highlight: the physical fitness pass rate for young children is 86.7%, with an excellent rate of 33.8%, and the pass rate for elderly people is 86.1%, with an excellent rate of 33.3%, indicating a significant improvement in physical fitness level. From a regional perspective, the gap in physical fitness levels between urban and rural residents is gradually narrowing: the pass rate in urban areas is 86.2%, while in rural areas it is 83.3%, further narrowing the gap compared to previous monitoring. Behind these data lies the concrete practice of people-centered development thinking. From fitness trails in urban communities to sports equipment in rural squares, from the school's "one hour exercise per day" to the workplace exercise system in government agencies, the trend of national fitness is on the rise, and the concept of "exercise is a good doctor" is increasingly deeply rooted in people's hearts. The continuous improvement of national physical fitness has value far beyond health itself. On the one hand, it is a barometer of economic and social development. The improvement of physical fitness rate is closely related to factors such as increasing residents' income, improving nutritional conditions, and improving medical security. During the 14th Five Year Plan period, China adhered to the principle of prevention as the mainstay and established the world's largest disease prevention and control system, as well as the largest medical service system. The capacity, accessibility, and fairness of health services have been continuously improved and enhanced. On the other hand, it is a "barometer" of social civilization progress. When running marathons has changed from a hobby of a few people to a cultural calling card of the city, and when teenagers have shifted from relying on screens to running on the sports field, national fitness has become an important carrier for promoting a positive lifestyle. More noteworthy is that the comprehensive benefits of improving physical fitness for health are becoming apparent. According to research by the World Health Organization, regular physical activity can reduce all-cause mortality by 20% to 30%. Monitoring data in our country also shows that the incidence of chronic diseases is lower among individuals with good physical fitness compared to those who are not qualified. This means that improving the physical fitness of the people can fundamentally reduce the suffering of individual illnesses and provide key support for promoting the construction of a healthy China during the 15th Five Year Plan period and achieving the transition from "medical care for the sick" to "effective prevention of diseases". At present, the hierarchical distribution of the physical fitness level of the Chinese people, which is higher in the east and lower in the west, has been significantly improved, but there is still a gap between the eastern and western regions. Behind this is both the constraint of economic development level and the influence of cultural concepts. In addition, we should also be alert to the implicit differences between different groups, such as some high-intensity mental workers experiencing physical decline due to prolonged sitting or staying up late, and some elderly people falling into the misconception of "excessive exercise" due to a lack of scientific guidance. All of these remind us that health promotion cannot be limited to quantitative coverage, but should also achieve qualitative improvement. This year is the beginning of the 15th Five Year Plan, and we should use systematic thinking to promote the overall improvement of the national physical fitness to a comprehensive and balanced leap. Firstly, it is necessary to strengthen regional collaboration and address the weaknesses in the western region. Intensify financial transfer payments for sports infrastructure in the central and western regions, and promote the paired assistance mechanism of "East Belt West". At the same time, combined with regional characteristics, traditional ethnic sports projects are developed, such as the ice and snow Nadam in Inner Mongolia, which perfectly combines traditional customs with ice and snow resources, inspiring the enthusiasm of the masses to participate. Secondly, focus on key populations and achieve precise empowerment. For the youth group, deepen the integration of sports and education, incorporate physical health into students' comprehensive quality evaluation, and ensure the rigid implementation of "exercising for one hour every day"; Targeting occupational groups, promote the establishment of "health accounts" in enterprises and institutions, linking subsidies for workplace exercises and fitness with performance evaluations; For the elderly, improve the "exercise prescription" service system and rely on community health service centers to provide scientific fitness guidance. Once again, explore innovative governance models to stimulate public motivation. Promote the government led, socially involved, and market-oriented public service supply model for national fitness, encourage social capital to invest in smart fitness facilities, and develop customized sports apps. Spread scientific fitness knowledge through short videos, community activities, and other forms, creating a social atmosphere where everyone participates and benefits.
