Yellow House on Huayuan Street: Opening up a Century of Memories in Harbin

2026-01-06

If Central Street is a magnificent reception room facing the world in Harbin, the Chinese Baroque district is a boiling and lively central kitchen, and the historical and cultural district of Huayuan Street is a "breathing yellow house", perhaps it can open up a different urban biography for you - a century old diary written in a brick and wood structure, hidden behind double layered window frames, and now softly recited under warm winter lights and ice sculptures. Follow the signs of the Museum Station on Metro Line 2 and walk west for only five minutes. The goose yellow buildings that suddenly come into view will make people feel like they have fallen into a time zone - there is no hustle and bustle of Central Street here, but there is a more lively atmosphere than the quiet streets. This is the historical and cultural block of Harbin Huayuan Street, which locals prefer to call "Yellow House". The regional planning was launched in 1899, and large-scale residential construction began in 1901. Originally a gathering place for senior staff of the Middle East Railway, it is now the most complete and largest existing Russian style residential community in Harbin. ”Shao Peng, the director of the Qiulin District Management Office in Nangang District, Harbin City, introduced that the "Yellow House" with yellow walls and red roofs is the most distinctive sign of the block. The two and a half brick thick walls, the brick and wood structure of the double slope roof, the craftsmanship of coarse stone footings and plain brick walls not only witness the passage of time, but also accumulate high historical, scientific and artistic value. As soon as I stepped into the block, a 15 meter long ice sculpture of the "Eight Horses" stretched across the streets and alleys. The crystal clear horses seemed to gallop out from the historical depths of the Yellow House, and the sunlight penetrated the ice, reflecting a rainbow like halo. Eight scattered ice sculptures, either Russian nesting dolls or ballet dancers, form wonderful visual chords. Hong Kong tourist Yilang excitedly picked up a handful of snow and rubbed it repeatedly, "This is real snow!" Then he simply lay in the snow and freely felt the texture and temperature of the snow. The true chapter plays after nightfall. When the brick walls of 1901 meet the lights of 2026, when the melodious sound of the Bayan qin plays, European antique street lamps light up one after another, and warm orange light overflows from the restored wooden window frames, intertwining with the cold and bright blue light of the ice sculptures. At that moment, the exquisite elegance of 'Little Paris of the East' was no longer an abstract term, but a melody in the ears and a flowing light in front of the eyes. Since its opening in August 2025, this place has received over a million visitors and has become a new check-in spot for ice and snow tourism in Harbin during the New Year period. In the Russian restaurant of Qiulin Yanghang, tourists from Fujian linger in the old photos inside the house, tasting authentic Russian food and cannot help but praise: "The charm of Harbin is not only ice and snow, but also this unique style." During the New Year's Day, more than ten shops such as Madier Craft Beer House, Baikal Time Sino Russian Restaurant, Portman Western Restaurant, etc. were crowded, confirming the charm of combining "scenery" and "flavor". The deeper exploration of urban culture lies in making it perceptible, playable, and experientiable. Vintage vintage cars are not static displays, but backgrounds that shuttle through them; The courtyard concert has no threshold, and the melody falls into ordinary alleys with the wind; The young artist sketching and the elderly strolling share the same sunshine. The cultural relics here are not stagnant histories, but natural extensions of living scenes. The century old yellow house is not only a silent witness, but also an elegant inviter. Its story awaits every visitor, writing new paragraphs with their own footsteps and gaze. (New Society)
