Make children feel great both physically and mentally! 13 departments issue document to launch the "Five Health" promotion action

Healthy China starts with children. Obesity, myopia, psychological and behavioral abnormalities, abnormal spinal curvature, and dental caries - these five major health issues for children and adolescents have attracted social attention. On December 30, 2025, the National Health Commission and 13 other departments announced the "Action Plan for Promoting the 'Five Health' of Children and Adolescents (2026-2030)". The action plan proposes that by 2030, the excellent rate of national student physical health standards for primary and secondary school students should reach over 60%, the myopia rate in high school should be reduced to below 70%, the proportion of psychological and behavioral development monitoring for children aged 0 to 6 should reach 90%, screening for abnormal spinal curvature in primary and secondary school students should be widely carried out, and effective intervention should be provided for caries in children aged 5 and 12... A series of "hard indicators" should be taken to care for children's healthy growth. Reaching a higher weight standard - obesity in children and adolescents has become one of the important public health issues threatening the physical and mental health of children and adolescents in China. Data shows that the current overweight and obesity rate among children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 in China is about 19%. The action plan provides a prescription for "exercise+nutrition", such as incorporating weight management into early pregnancy care and prenatal health services to reduce intergenerational transmission of obesity; Implement health management services for children aged 0-6, strengthen physical examinations, growth and development, and other health guidance; Promote the construction of healthy canteens and restaurants in primary and secondary schools; Cultivating children and adolescents' interest in sports... Brighter eyes - In recent years, the trend of "little glasses" becoming younger and more prevalent has become a key factor affecting children's physical and mental health. According to the action plan, by 2030, the refractive screening rate for children aged 0-6 and primary and secondary school students will gradually increase; The myopia rate of 6-year-old children is controlled at around 3%, the myopia rate of primary school students drops to below 32%, the myopia rate of junior high school students drops to below 60%, and the myopia rate of high school students drops to below 70%. To this end, a series of "heartwarming measures" are on the way: pre-school children undergo refractive screening at 24 months, 36 months, 4 years, 5 years, and 6 years old, monitor their farsightedness reserve, and advance the prevention and control of myopia; Establish and improve electronic records of visual health for children and adolescents, and implement graded and classified interventions; Deepen the implementation of the 'School Brightness Project', and ensure that classroom lighting in primary and secondary schools meets all standards. Psychological Sunshine - Currently, the mental health issues of primary and secondary school students are receiving increasing attention from society, and mental health work is facing new situations and challenges. For primary and secondary school students, each school should have at least one full-time (part-time) mental health education teacher, and encourage the provision of full-time mental health education teachers with a background in psychology. Primary and secondary schools should hold at least one mental health lecture or related educational activity per academic year. At the same time, promote the application of the psychological assistance hotline "12356" and the youth service hotline "12355". Actively promote autism screening and intervention services for children aged 0-6 years old; Promote maternal and child health institutions to strengthen the construction of children's mental health departments (clinics), encourage children's hospitals, comprehensive hospitals at or above the second level, and traditional Chinese medicine hospitals to open mental (psychological) clinics, and enhance their mental health service capabilities; Establishing a sound collaborative mechanism between primary and secondary schools, as well as medical and health institutions... A gentle and resilient support network is expected to allow more young hearts to grow up in the sunshine. Stronger bones - asymmetrical back, tilted pelvis, high and low shoulders... If a child experiences these symptoms, there may be abnormal spinal curvature. Guide preschool children and primary and secondary school students to strengthen physical exercise; Increase students' extracurricular exercise time; Guiding primary and secondary school students to choose suitable backpacks, regularly adjusting the height of desks and chairs, and seat spacing... The upright action related to "physical beauty" and "healthy bones" will be promoted simultaneously inside and outside the campus. At the screening level, schools conduct an annual screening and evaluation of abnormal spinal curvature for children and adolescents aged 10 to 16, and maternal and child health institutions, disease control institutions, and primary healthcare institutions with conditions strengthen technical support; The school records the spinal health status in the students' health records and promptly refers students with screening abnormalities to medical institutions for further diagnosis and treatment; Give full play to the characteristics and advantages of traditional Chinese medicine intervention in children and adolescents with abnormal spinal curvature, and improve the intervention effect. Healthier oral health - dental caries, commonly known as "tooth decay", is one of the common chronic diseases in children. Protecting oral health starts with 'teeth'. The action plan requires medical and health institutions and schools to strengthen science popularization and publicity; Relevant medical and health institutions assist primary and secondary schools in conducting one routine oral examination per year for their students; Various regions should strengthen the prevention and control measures of oral diseases such as local use of fluoride and pit and fissure sealing for eligible children, gradually reducing the incidence of dental caries. Although the "Five Health" are small, they are related to the overall situation. The action plan is firmly focusing on the "1" of health, and clearly proposes to promote the establishment of "campus health corners" in schools, providing scales, height gauges, vision charts, disposable oral examination equipment kits, etc; Guide families to equip themselves with health tools such as weight scales, salt spoons, sugar limited snack boxes, and toothbrush timers; Support the establishment of "health stations" in communities, providing health services such as weight measurement, vision screening, psychological literacy assessment, physical fitness monitoring, and dental caries examination; Promote the construction of child friendly hospitals and establish "caring spaces" for children. Joint prevention and management reflect a country's systematic commitment and practical actions to care for the healthy growth of children. Through the efforts of the whole society, the children have grown strong and trained well! (New Society)
