Manas National Wetland Park in Xinjiang: Ecological tourism activates winter tourism fever

2025-12-26

In the winter of Manas National Wetland Park in Xinjiang, the water surface is like a mirror, and flocks of swans swim leisurely, sometimes looking down for food, sometimes spreading their wings and gently tapping the ripples, injecting vitality into the tranquil wetland together with birds such as grey geese and green headed ducks that come one after another. In the warm room of the bird watching platform, tourists taste swan themed cakes and coffee while admiring the lively movements of birds outside the window; Photography enthusiasts gather in a corner of the greenhouse to exchange and select photos, exuding warmth and comfort amidst the hustle and bustle. This winter, a 300 square meter bird watching platform and warm house were officially put into use, replacing the original simple bird watching platform. The warm house has a wide view and complete functions. Visitors can clearly observe the graceful figures of swans and other migratory birds through the large glass windows, enjoying a warm and comfortable bird watching time. Photography enthusiast Jiang Guo, who has visited this place multiple times, couldn't help but feel emotional when comparing the changes of the past and present: "Many years ago, there was only one wooden road here, but now you can enter the house to warm up during bird photography breaks, and the experience has been greatly improved." Manas National Wetland Park is located at a key node of the world's migratory bird "Line 3" and is an important ecological barrier and "supply station" for migratory birds at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains. The park has various wetland types such as river wetlands, reservoir wetlands, and swamp wetlands, with rich biodiversity. As an important wintering and breeding ground for swans, their habitat has been observed here for many years. According to monitoring, the number of swans that overwintered here last winter and this spring has exceeded a thousand, with a significant increase in the proportion of young birds, reflecting the continuous enhancement of population renewal ability. To ensure the wintering of swans, caretakers break the ice and feed them daily during winter to maintain unfrozen waters and ensure worry free foraging for birds. Zhang Jiankun, Director of the Manas National Wetland Park Management Bureau, said, "Swans are regarded as' environmental assessors', and their choice to bring their young birds to overwinter here continuously is the most direct recognition of the wetland ecological environment. This achievement stems from the long-term ecological restoration efforts of Manas County. Since the pilot construction of the National Wetland Park was launched in 2011, the local area has restored more than 30000 acres of wetlands through systematic projects such as returning farmland to wetlands, ecological water replenishment, and vegetation restoration. Currently, the total area of the wetland park has reached 47.02 square kilometers, and the wetland coverage rate has increased to 64.12%. Nowadays, the park provides a high-quality habitat for 315 species of wild animals. Ecological improvement has significantly boosted the popularity of winter tourism. On the shore, photography enthusiasts set up equipment early to capture the elegant posture of swans; Surrounding villagers also rely on wetland resources to develop rural tourism, homestays and other businesses, sharing the ecological dividends. At the same time, rural tourism around wetlands has been revitalized by the "bird watching economy". With the "scenic area leading the village and the integration of agriculture, culture, and tourism" model, Bajiahu Village will achieve a per capita income of 36100 yuan by 2025, achieving a win-win situation for ecological protection and improvement of people's livelihoods. Standing at the bird watching tower, gazing into the distance, the winter water network of Manas Wetland intertwines, with reeds blooming like snow. The wind is mixed with clear water vapor and the fragrance of plants and trees, and flocks of migratory birds dance gracefully. The construction of the bird watching platform warm house not only enhances the tourist experience, but also serves as a vivid practice for Manas County to promote high-quality development of "ecology+tourism" and write a story of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
