Fei Ming's' Confidence '
2025-12-19
In the modern literary world, Fei Ming (1901-1967) is renowned for his "confidence". As early as the 1920s, Fei Ming firmly believed that the artistic lifespan of his novel "Bridge" would be "several hundred thousand years longer" (Shuo Meng, "Yu Si" Weekly, May 28, 1927, Issue 133). In 1932, when the novel "The Biography of Mr. Mo Xu You" was about to be published, due to its difficulty in understanding, "almost the whole country unanimously" requested Fei Ming to write a preface to explain it. However, he believed that "if it is difficult to understand, it is because Mr. Mo Xu You is already difficult to understand" and that "difficult to understand is one of its beauties". "The Biography of Mr. Mo Xu You does have a thought-provoking value" (Preface, "The Biography of Mr. Mo Xu You", Kaiming Bookstore, 1932 edition). From 1936 to 1937, Fei Ming taught new poetry at Peking University and wrote twelve chapters of lecture notes. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, he returned to his hometown Huangmei, Hubei for refuge. In 1946, he returned to Peking University and continued to compile four chapters of new poetry lectures, with the last chapter being "A Chapter About Myself". He compared his poetry with those of Bian Zhilin, Lin Geng, Feng Zhi, and others, while acknowledging that their poetry was well written, 'I am beyond my reach.'; On the other hand, he said, "My poetry also has its limitations, that is, my poetry is natural, accidental, not scattered, not written but still poetic. They are poets who write poetry and make poetry their career, just like I write novels." "My poetry lacks the color and fragrance of the world, which is why people say it is difficult to understand. If we talk about the completeness of poetry, no one's poetry can compare to it." ("Lectures on New Poetry - A Chapter about Myself", Tianjin Republican Daily Literature and Art, April 5, 1948, Issue 120). Before writing "A Chapter about Myself," Fei Ming gave a speech titled "My Own Poetry" on January 5, 1947, at the Red Chamber Auditorium of Peking University. He distributed a mimeographed copy of "Selected Poems of Fei Ming" (a total of twelve poems) to everyone present. He said that these poems are "very good poems, the most accomplished and perfect in art" ("My Own Poems" - Professor Feng Wenbing's Lecture at Peking University ", Beijing New Student Daily, January 6, 1947, 4th edition). On January 12th, the Chinese Department of Peking University held a celebration. Fei Ming said in his speech, "No matter how ancient or modern it is, all the best works written are like mine..." ("The Stream is Missing", Beijing Yishi Daily, January 15, 1947, 4th edition) In 1957, People's Literature Publishing House published "Selected Novels by Fei Ming. In the preface, Fei Ming expressed dissatisfaction with his "fifty years of avoiding the great era" and made a profound reflection on his past thoughts, but believed that his works still have merit and can be used for reference, which is "not willing to waste language". In 1958, in response to the problem of some young poets in Changchun City not being "restrained" in emotions and language and blindly "venting" their emotions, Fei Ming said, "Compared to spitting everywhere, the new poems I wrote in the past are as precious as gold." ("Talking about New Poetry," Jilin Daily, January 26, 1958, 3rd edition) In academic research, Fei Ming also has extraordinary "confidence". During the period of refuge in Huangmei, Fei Ming wrote a Buddhist work called "On Alaya Consciousness", and later personally gave a handwritten copy of this work to a monk for blind reading. One blind wrote in an article: "When Mr. Fei Ming left, I expressed or could fully accept the high opinions in his work, and perhaps have other opinions to put forward to him. He said that the latter layer was what he hoped for." ("Buddhist Manga Tan (IV)", "World Explanation", 1947, Issue 4) Fei Ming read this article and was greatly dissatisfied: "I invited him to read the handwritten copy of" Alaya's Treatise on Consciousness ", just for him to have a preview, without thinking that he had any other opinions to express to me. This is not that I am not humble, but that I should not have been polite. I once joked to him that if my words were wrong, You can have your tongue cut off Li Shangyin has a quatrain called "Moon": "Passing through the water, passing through the tower, touching the place where the light shines, the Tibetan carrying the tree far away contains clarity. The desire for emptiness and melancholy at birth may not necessarily be fulfilled when it is full." Regarding the meaning of this poem, Fei Ming has asked many people, but no one's answer is the same as his. So I was a little scared. Am I the only one right? Is everyone wrong? I quickly became confident again. I am indeed right. Please take my words as right. "(" Speaking a Poem ", Beijing Pingming Daily Zhou Yiwen, January 12, 1947, Issue 3) Although Fei Ming was very" confident "in his literary creation and academic research, he was not arrogant, self righteous, or stubborn. Once he realizes he is wrong, he will promptly correct it and follow good advice. A small incident recorded by Wu Xiaoru in an article fully illustrates this point: "As far as I know, once a teacher thinks his views are wrong, he immediately publicly corrects them and is brave enough to criticize himself. The teacher teaches Tao poetry and prepares for classes very seriously, but Ding Fubao's' Annotations on Tao Poetry 'has never been memorized. During one class, the teacher saw me holding this book and borrowed it to read. In the next class, the teacher corrected some of his previous views based on the materials cited by Ding. This shows that the teacher's imagination is like a valley." ("Mr. Fei Ming's posthumous writings urgently need to be sorted out", Hong Kong Ta Kung Pao, January 16, 1983) (New Society)
