2025-12-17
This year marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Chile. For over half a century, no matter how the international situation changes, the ship of China Chile relations has always sailed through the wind and waves, leading the trend of China Latin American countries' relations development. Chile was the first South American country to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, the first Latin American country to recognize China's full market economy status, and the first to sign a bilateral free trade agreement with China and achieve upgrading. With an open and inclusive attitude, China and Chile have jointly written a great story of cooperation that transcends mountains and seas. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the signing of the China Chile Free Trade Agreement. Over the past 20 years, China Chile economic and trade relations have achieved a qualitative leap. In 2024, the trade volume between China and Chile is about 61.6 billion US dollars, which is 8.6 times higher than before the implementation of the 2005 free trade agreement. China has been Chile's largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years, as well as Chile's largest export market and largest source of imports. China supports more Chinese enterprises to invest and develop in Chile, and welcomes more high-quality Chilean products to enter the Chinese market. Chilean cherries, wine, and salmon are increasingly appearing on the dining tables of Chinese consumers, and China's electric vehicles, photovoltaic equipment, and 5G technology are also providing important support for Chile's energy transformation and digital construction. The northern Chilean city of Copiapo has launched 121 Chinese made pure electric buses, becoming the first city in South America to fully electrify its public transportation system. The CIIE, Canton Fair, Chain Expo and other platforms promote the deep integration of industrial and supply chains between the two countries. As the largest and highest level series of promotional activities for Chile in China, China's "Chile Week" has been held continuously for 10 years, sparking waves of "Chile fever" across China. China Chile high-quality joint construction of the "the Belt and Road" continues to go deeper and more practical. Chinese enterprises actively participate in the construction of clean energy, transportation infrastructure, healthcare, digital economy and other fields in Chile, and the investment cooperation between the two countries shows a good trend of both quantity and quality. Currently, China has become one of the main sources of foreign investment in Chile. In 2024, China's direct investment in Chile will expand to 23 times that of 2006, and the stock will be 150 times that of that time. The cooperation projects between the two countries in areas such as photovoltaic energy storage stations, ultra-high voltage transmission projects, and digital infrastructure continue to advance, injecting strong impetus into Chile's green and sustainable development. These investments not only create a large number of job opportunities for the local area, but also drive technology transfer and industrial upgrading. The deep integration between the two sides in areas such as standard interoperability, technological cooperation, and talent exchange is driving the cooperation between the two countries to a higher level, wider scope, and more sustainable. Currently, the global landscape is undergoing profound changes, economic globalization is facing challenges, and the multilateral trading system is facing tests. China always adheres to the concept of openness, inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation, insists on expanding high-level opening-up to the outside world, and is committed to promoting the construction of an open world economy and promoting inclusive economic globalization. As staunch defenders of multilateralism and free trade, China and Chile strengthen communication and cooperation within multilateral mechanisms, jointly practicing true multilateralism, which is conducive to maintaining the smooth and stable global industrial and supply chains and the common interests of the global South. The Chilean side expressed its willingness to work with China to firmly defend multilateralism and the authority of the United Nations, adhere to resolving differences through dialogue, and jointly uphold international fairness and justice. The Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China has made important arrangements for "expanding high-level opening up to the outside world and creating a new situation of win-win cooperation" in the next five years. China will actively expand independent opening up, promote trade innovation and development, expand space for two-way investment cooperation, and jointly build the "the Belt and Road" with high quality. This brings new opportunities and injects new momentum into China Chile economic and trade cooperation. China is willing to work with Chile to take the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as an opportunity, adhere to mutual respect, mutual trust, mutual benefit, and connectivity, continuously enrich the era connotation of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, create a model of China Latin America common development and South South cooperation, and jointly promote the cause of human peace and progress.
