World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2026

2025-12-17

The reporter recently learned from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that the theme for World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2026 (May 17) has been determined as "Digital Lifeline: Strengthening Resilience in the Connected World". The International Telecommunication Union hopes to emphasize the importance of resilient digital infrastructure for economic stability, inclusive growth, and technological innovation through this theme. The International Telecommunication Union stated in its interpretation of the theme that in a world increasingly reliant on uninterrupted connectivity, the resilience of digital networks is crucial. The digital lifeline - ground networks, submarine cables, satellites, and data systems - constitutes the backbone of our community and economy. A cable break, data center interruption, or satellite malfunction can potentially disrupt important services ranging from health and education to finance and disaster response. In an era of escalating natural disasters and increasing reliance on technology, building resilient digital infrastructure is crucial for the stability of the system and the development of all humanity. This is particularly true for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), where reliable connectivity is the cornerstone of their recovery from the impacts of climate change and supports the development of all humanity. The International Telecommunication Union calls on governments, industries, and communities to strengthen the digital lifeline that sustains the functioning of the world, design networks and systems that can withstand shocks and quickly recover, and ensure that no one is cut off or taken offline in critical moments. World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated annually since 1969 on May 17th, which is also the anniversary of the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union in 1865. In November 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society called on the United Nations General Assembly to designate May 17th as World Information Society Day, and the UN General Assembly passed a resolution in March 2006. The International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference held in November 2006 made a decision to merge the two festivals. (New Society)
