The AI onomatopoeic scam of 'hearing without substance' has deceived multiple elderly people
2025-12-15
Recently, the Huangshi Port District People's Court in Huangshi City, Hubei Province, tried a case of electronic fraud. In this case, three elderly people in Huangshi City fell into panic after receiving a call for help in the name of their grandson. They were lured by fraudsters to obtain tens of thousands of yuan in cash. All three elderly people claimed that the voice of their grandson was indeed heard in the call for help. In April of this year, Grandma Ding from Huangshi, Hubei received a phone call with the familiar voice of her "grandson" on the other end. The other party cried and claimed to have had a conflict with a classmate at school and accidentally injured someone. Upon hearing that her grandson had an accident at school, Grandma Ding immediately panicked. The "grandson" on the other end of the phone asked his grandmother to prepare cash and said that the other party's parents would come to collect the money. Grandma Ding, who had no doubts about it, immediately raised 20000 yuan in cash and handed it over to Wu, who came to withdraw the money. To strengthen trust, Wu reconnected with "Sun Zi" during the withdrawal process and asked the elderly person to confirm in person. On the same day, a similar plot was replayed on two other elderly people in Yellowstone City. Grandma Ke was scammed out of 20000 yuan each for using phrases such as "her grandson injured a classmate" and "Grandma Zhong was sent to the public security organs to redeem someone". It was not until the elderly communicated with their grandchildren afterwards that they realized they had been deceived. The police in Huangshi, Hubei, investigated three cases together and found that the withdrawer in these three cases was the same suspect, Mr. Wu. After Wu arrived at the case, in order to seek leniency, he gathered 60000 yuan in funds and fully refunded the three deceived elderly people. The "high paying job" only requires money withdrawal. The "driver" was sentenced for fraud. Recently, the Huangshi Port District People's Court in Huangshi City, Hubei Province tried the case and made a judgment, sentencing Wu, the "driver" responsible for collecting cash in the case, to two years and one month in prison and a fine of RMB 15000 in accordance with the law. Xiang Shuqing, the person in charge of the Criminal Trial Division of Huangshi Port District People's Court in Huangshi City, said: Wu knowingly committed fraud and was still arranged by the authorities to collect fraudulent funds from the victim. Subjectively, he had criminal intent and objectively provided assistance for the transfer of fraudulent funds, which meets the constitutive requirements of being an accomplice in fraud. According to Article 266 of the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China, we believe that it constitutes the crime of fraud. In April 2025, Wu's friend introduced him to a so-called "high paying job" where he could earn at least 1500 yuan per day by simply "withdrawing money". Xiang Shuqing, the person in charge of the Criminal Trial Division of Huangshi Port District People's Court in Huangshi City: Although he had doubts and said that the money may have come from an unknown source, in order to earn this kind of quick money, he agreed to go directly to the victim's house to get the money, and even impersonated someone else's identity. On April 28th, Wu went to 5 different locations to collect cash according to the online instructions, and successfully committed crimes in three of them. On that day, after Wu withdrew the cash, he followed the instructions from the online platform and put the money in a remote location. As for who took the money later, he is not sure. In the case being heard in court, Wu played the role of withdrawing and transferring stolen funds. He quickly transferred the fraudulent funds, cut off the police's investigation of the defrauded funds, and obtained a "commission" from it. How did Wu's online fraud gang hide overseas and impersonate his grandson to call the elderly? Xiang Shuqing, the person in charge of the Criminal Trial Division of Huangshi Port District People's Court in Huangshi City: From the three fraud facts in this case, it can be seen that they all went online to obtain the trust of the victims by impersonating their grandsons and calling them. In fact, none of the grandsons of these victims have called the victims, so we believe that the fraud was carried out through AI voice acting. The court held that the AI onomatopoeia used by the overseas fraud gang in this case can highly restore the human voice tone and achieve real-time dialogue interaction. Elderly people are relatively unfamiliar with modern AI technology and find it difficult to recognize that the voice on the other end of the phone is forged, which is the key to the success of the fraud. The judge introduced that currently, fraudsters use new AI technologies to carry out fraud mainly through means such as "onomatopoeia" and "face swapping", that is, by simulating the voice or image of others to gain trust, and then defraud money. Victims often have difficulty distinguishing authenticity in the first place and fall into the trap of the other party. Mo Qingxin did not transfer the money and actively inquired for careful verification. Currently, the public security organs are still further investigating the case. The judge introduced that fraudsters use AI technology to commit fraud not only through "onomatopoeia" but also through "face swapping" and other means. Therefore, we remind you that whether it is voice or video, hearing is not believing, and seeing is not necessarily believing. There are several principles to keep in mind when it comes to expert advice: first, do not easily believe urgent calls from acquaintances; Secondly, there is no rush to transfer funds; Thirdly, do not disclose bank card passwords or SMS verification codes; Simply put, it means' not listening, not believing, not transferring money '. Another option is to proactively inquire about life details known only to both parties, and carefully confirm and verify each other's identity. (New Society)
