Chinese folk literature has been passed down from generation to generation, deeply integrated into the bloodline of Chinese civilization, and profoundly influenced the spiritual world of the Chinese people. In 2017, the "Opinions on Implementing the Project of Inheriting and Developing Excellent Traditional Chinese Culture" was issued, and the "Chinese Folk Literature Series Publishing Project" was listed as one of the first key projects. Over the past 8 years, more than 12000 experts and folk art workers across the country have been involved in the organization, research, publication, and dissemination of folk literature. From the first batch of achievement press conferences held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing in December 2019, to the major achievement of the publication of the "Chinese Folk Literature Series" exceeding 100 volumes at the Beijing Cultural Forum in September this year, a total of 619 volumes have been compiled and 116 volumes have been published. The beautiful vision of building a national collection library in the field of folk literature, inheriting precious human oral cultural heritage, and forming a shared folk literature series for generations is steadily being realized. The compilation and publication of the "Chinese Folk Literature Series" is a continuation of the Chinese cultural context and an exploration of the construction of an independent knowledge system in the field of folk literature. China has had the habit of collecting and organizing folk oral literature since ancient times. The Book of Songs, Yuefu Poetry, as well as the lyrics, music, and novels of the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, have all absorbed the achievements of folk literature and formed a system of text compilation while being passed down orally. The major publishing project is based on the academic context of the 21st century, drawing on the latest achievements of academic research, emphasizing the combination of diverse elements such as field scenes and performance behavior, and adopting a recording method that integrates text, audio, and video to achieve the transformation of folk literature from oral tradition to three-dimensional existence. It preserves the life and situational nature of folk literature, and endows it with contemporary interpretation space through academic sorting, striving to record and compile classic texts with contemporary humanistic sentiment and historical test in their original flavor. In the past 8 years, the major publishing projects have held nearly 100 symposiums for inheritors of folk literature, expert seminars, work promotion meetings, publishing review meetings, and organized a series of national training and academic investigations in large areas and twelve categories. Based on the excellent tradition of folk literature rooted in the fields, they have achieved innovative breakthroughs in recording technology, collected fresh folk literature materials, promoted academic discussions and speculation, and formed a large number of insightful research results, making in-depth explorations for the construction of an independent knowledge system for Chinese folk literature. Folk literature is a "living" culture, whose vitality lies not only in its preservation, but also in its dissemination and application. The major publishing project actively promotes the revitalization of excellent folk literature resources, integrating folk stories, songs, epics, proverbs, myths, legends, and other oral traditions that have been passed down for thousands of years into new communication spaces, and further enabling folk literature to play a positive role in expressing the new era and telling new life stories. In recent years, in more than 20 themed exhibitions and performances held successively, ancient stories and songs have reappeared on the contemporary stage, and folk literature traditions have been integrated into modern life, becoming a source of inspiration for contemporary literary and artistic creation, cultural entertainment, and creative industries, and a new highlight of regional cultural and tourism integration development, playing an empowering role in economic and social development. Especially the 1.6 billion word database built by the major publishing project is not only a solid foundation for academic research, but also a database for content IP, which will provide assistance for the development of the national digital culture and creative industry. The rich literary traditions of folk stories, myths and legends, folk songs and proverbs in our country, including the collective memory, wisdom of life, and spiritual character of the Chinese nation, are highly potential cultural IP resources for development. In recent years, China's gaming and film industries have made breakthrough progress in the utilization of related resources. Through technological intervention, the development of folk mythology IP has formed a complete industrial chain from single project content products to serialized industries and peripheral derivatives. Promoting "creative transformation and innovative development", the abundant folk literature resources will be the active resources that continuously generate new content, new formats, and new models, promoting the continuous development of cultural industries with Chinese recognition. Throughout history, folk literature passed down from generation to generation has been an important carrier and link for cultural exchanges, social practices, and social relationships among the general public. It is also a unique identifier that distinguishes a group from others. The major publishing project has reorganized a massive amount of folk literature materials, which have cultural foundation attributes and are the spiritual and cultural wealth of the entire nation. They not only provide a reference for the emotional expression of the people in reality and history, but also further enhance the cultural cohesion and centripetal force of the people, and write vivid chapters of cultural confidence. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that "Chinese culture has always advocated the idea of 'collecting the missing texts of a century and the legacy of a thousand years'. We need to explore the ideological concepts, humanistic spirit, and moral norms of excellent traditional Chinese culture, integrate artistic creativity with Chinese cultural values, combine Chinese aesthetic spirit with contemporary aesthetic pursuits, and activate the vitality of Chinese culture." We will continue to deepen this cultural foundation project, promote folk literature to play a greater role in building the identity system of Chinese civilization and nourishing contemporary cultural innovation, lay a solid foundation for the construction of the spiritual home of the Chinese nation, and continuously accumulate profound and lasting cultural power for the construction of Chinese style modernization.
