How college students can forge their core competitiveness in employment

2025-12-09

Recently, a news has once again made the topic of employment for graduates a focus of attention - the expected number of graduates from ordinary colleges and universities nationwide in 2026 is 12.7 million, an increase of 480000 compared to the same period last year. At present, it is a critical moment for autumn recruitment. The Ministry of Education has deployed various regions and universities to carry out the "2026 College Graduates Employment Expansion and Quality Improvement Action", continuously promoting the implementation of employment promotion policies, strengthening job stability and expansion, supporting entrepreneurship to drive employment, deepening the integration of industry and education supply and demand adaptation, and promoting high-quality and full employment for college graduates. Compared to the past, the current job market is showing many new trends - new disciplines and majors are constantly emerging, and new work models such as remote work are becoming increasingly common... In the rapidly changing world, graduates need more practical support and guidance. To this end, the reporter has sorted out several job seeking issues that students are concerned about and invited professionals to answer and clarify their doubts. Clear direction and finding one's own path: In recent years, there have been many new disciplines and majors that were not well understood before, and interdisciplinary talent cultivation has also received much attention. As a humanities student, I feel a strong sense of skill panic. How can one form their core competitiveness? Wang Xi, Associate Professor and Researcher at the School of Economics, Peking University: This question is very representative. Before starting the discussion, I would like to share the experiences of two renowned scholars - Academician Qian Weichang and American economist Robert Lucas. Academician Qian Weichang is one of the founders of modern mechanics in China. His "Shallow Shell Large Disturbance Equation" is known as the "Qian Weichang Equation" in the international academic community. Lucas was the winner of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Economics and the founder of the "rational expectations school". He made outstanding contributions to embedding micro analysis foundations in macroeconomic analysis and is one of the founders of modern macroeconomics. However, if we look back at the academic starting point, they all belonged to the ranks of humanities students: Mr. Qian Weichang was particularly skilled in humanities during his youth, and was admitted to Tsinghua University with a score of 100 in both Chinese and history, but only scored 5 points in physics. Lucas majored in history during his undergraduate studies. The stories of two outstanding scholars remind us that when humanities students face interdisciplinary challenges, the first step may be to dispel fear and establish correct cognition. On the one hand, humanities students may feel that information theory, mathematical analysis, numerical algorithms, and other disciplines behind intelligence are too difficult and feel powerless in the face of heavy academic workload; On the other hand, when it comes to interdisciplinary theories and tools, humanities students are prone to excessive focus on "technology" itself, while neglecting the fundamental issues of the discipline that should have been focused on. In fact, the importance of disciplinary issues is no less than methods and tools. Therefore, in the learning process, not only should we understand the applicable scenarios of different tools and the logic behind the models, but we should also continue to think about how to use these new tools and methods to answer fundamental and important subject questions in the subject? As for 'core competitiveness', it is indeed a complex issue that is extremely difficult to answer. I think the significance of learning lies in helping us better grasp the disciplinary context, establish a continuously updated knowledge system, and cultivate the ability to acquire new information and master new skills. The world is so vast that everyone can find their own track. The key is how we can clarify our direction and find our own path. I suggest that everyone make good use of auxiliary tools in the learning process to reduce the mental exhaustion caused by repetitive labor, that is, "borrowing external forces to help study diligently". At the same time, we must always grasp the "main contradiction" of learning, constantly remind ourselves of the purpose of learning interdisciplinary theories, clarify their similarities and differences with traditional methods, and constantly promote our thinking on important academic or practical issues at present, that is, "continuous reflection to clarify direction". Do not become overly obsessed with interdisciplinary methods and neglect the importance of researching the problem itself. In addition, everyone should adhere to learning guided by key academic issues, achieving the goal of "using knowledge to promote learning and answering real questions". In my opinion, this unique cognitive path and approach accumulated through "diligent learning, constant thinking, and effective utilization" is our most sustainable core competitiveness. To choose a new mode of work, one must first do a good job of self-evaluation. Students: Nowadays, new work modes such as remote work and freelance work are becoming increasingly common. What should I pay attention to when choosing this type of job? Professor Zhang Zhenhua from the School of Economics at Lanzhou University: For graduates who are about to enter society, if they intend to choose such jobs, they must pay attention to rational evaluation and sufficient preparation in the following aspects. The core of the new work model lies in the reconstruction of the workplace, working hours, and work relationships. Graduates first need to realize that whether it is remote work or freelance work, practitioners are required to have stronger autonomy and a sense of responsibility. Remote work relies on the support of collaborative tools such as online meetings; Freelancing relies on the global job market created by the platform economy. Understanding these basic characteristics is a prerequisite for making the right choices. Choosing a work mode that suits oneself requires a systematic self-assessment. For graduates who tend to work remotely, it is important to focus on their self-discipline and time management abilities, evaluate whether they can maintain work efficiency in an environment lacking direct supervision, and whether they are good at maintaining work relationships through online means. At the same time, it is necessary to examine the level of support provided by enterprises for remote work, including whether they offer comprehensive remote collaboration mechanisms, promotion channels, and training resources. For graduates who intend to pursue freelance work, it is necessary to evaluate their market competitiveness. This includes assessing the scarcity and sustainability of one's own skills in market demand, understanding the characteristics and opportunities of different platforms, and selecting development areas that match one's expertise. It should be noted that while the new working mode provides flexibility, it also comes with specific risks. Remote workers need to be vigilant about issues such as reduced professional visibility and limited development opportunities, and consciously maintain close contact with the team through methods such as showcasing achievements. Freelancers need to fully assess their risk tolerance: they face real risks such as project fluctuations, unstable income, and social security self-care, which requires practitioners to constantly strengthen their unique advantages in professional abilities. For graduates who have not yet clarified their direction, it is recommended to adopt a gradual development strategy. You can first choose a job position with a hybrid office mode to experience the new work mode while maintaining a relatively stable working environment. You can also gradually accumulate experience and establish a personal brand by undertaking part-time projects. Freelancers should pay attention to building a personal professional image, and systematically showcase their professional abilities through creating personal websites, organizing portfolios, and operating professional social media accounts. The times are changing, and the forms of work are also changing, but the ability for lifelong learning is always the cornerstone of personal development. For graduates, only by maintaining a continuous learning attitude can they walk steadily and achieve great success in the tide of the times. Cracking the information gap between schools and workplaces to achieve accurate matching of students' positions: We have found that there is an "information gap" between schools and workplaces. On the one hand, we are not familiar with many job descriptions and job responsibilities; On the other hand, we also don't know what kind of talent companies need. How to deal with this problem? Zhang Rui, a member of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Guidance Committee of the Ministry of Education, said that the "information gap" between schools and the workplace lies in the difference in the operational logic between supply and demand - enterprises design positions based on industry demand, while universities cultivate talents according to the internal logic of disciplinary development. This structural difference has led to many students having insufficient job recognition, resulting in two typical dilemmas - either blindly submitting to a vast number of opportunities and missing out on truly suitable positions; Or choose slow employment or slow employment due to excessive confusion. For graduates, the most crucial issue is how to achieve a precise two-way match between their own abilities and job requirements. I suggest that students start with a systematic self-assessment: they should not only sort out hard power indicators such as professional knowledge, skill certificates, and practical achievements, but also use methods such as career assessments and industry enterprise research to clarify subject knowledge abilities, core general abilities, and enterprise job abilities based on career goals, gradually building a complete and comprehensive personal ability map. In addition, with the rapid development of innovative applications of artificial intelligence, people can also use the human job intelligent matching system to achieve accurate comparison with recruitment positions through system calculations, helping them quickly define the suitable industry and job scope. By combining their own interests, academic expertise, and professional background, they can more rationally establish the most suitable employment goals for personal development. It should be emphasized that precise matching of personnel and positions is only a crucial step in knocking on the door to job hunting, not the end point. In the final recruitment process, employers will still conduct multidimensional assessments such as written tests and interviews to deeply examine students' professional skills, comprehensive qualities, and job suitability. Therefore, students still need to focus their core energy on the systematic polishing of their comprehensive job search abilities: resume creation should break away from the inertia of "information listing" thinking, use job requirements as anchor points, present core competitiveness with data-driven results, and highlight the fit between abilities and positions through scenario based narrative; The preparation for the written test should focus on the assessment key points of the target industry, and carry out specialized training in modules such as professional knowledge, logical thinking, and professional ethics to accumulate problem-solving skills and master the pace of answering questions; Interviews should strengthen the ability to express logic, adapt on the spot, and communicate and collaborate. Typical cases from personal experiences should be sorted out in advance, and response strategies should be optimized through simulation exercises. At the same time, attention should be paid to the natural transmission of professional etiquette and values, so that employers can clearly perceive their potential and adaptability. (New Society)
