Surviving on energy drinks? Be careful of stroke

This is a shocking case that happened in reality, published in the latest BMJ Case Report. The protagonist is a man over fifty years old who claims to be strong and healthy on a regular basis. However, without any warning, he was struck down by a sudden stroke. He was urgently taken to the hospital by ambulance, and when he woke up, the left side of his body seemed to be trapped by an invisible shackle, with numbness and a sense of powerlessness following him like a shadow. What's even more terrifying is that his sense of balance is completely lost, his steps are unsteady, his words are vague, and even swallowing has become a luxury. After diagnosis, the culprit is the thalamus, the "fortress" that controls perception and movement deep in his brain, which has undergone pathological changes. The tricky problem faced by doctors is that his blood pressure is astonishingly high, reaching 254/150 millimeters of mercury, which is already classified as "extremely dangerous" in medicine. Although emergency medication temporarily suppressed the soaring numbers, once they returned home, the raging 'blood pressure monster' would break free from its restraints. It wasn't until the doctor relentlessly questioned his lifestyle habits that a shocking truth emerged. This man has an unwavering hobby: he drinks at least 8 cans of energy drinks every day. This made the medical team break out in a cold sweat. These drinks contain 160 milligrams of caffeine per can, and when he drinks 8 cans, he consumes up to 1200-1300 milligrams of caffeine per day. This is more than three times the recommended safe intake (400 milligrams). Under the strict orders of the doctor, he quit this habit of "extending his life". A miracle happened immediately, and the stubborn high blood pressure subsided like a receding tide, no longer requiring medication to suppress it. However, once the damage to bodily functions is caused, it is difficult to fully recover. Until today, eight years later, the numbness marks left by that 'storm' still linger on the fingertips and toes of his left hand. This case serves as a warning bell, awakening people's excessive dependence on energy drinks. Such beverages on the market often wear the cloak of fashion and vitality, not only containing excessive caffeine, but also hiding high sugar and ingredients such as guarana, taurine, ginseng, etc. Especially in guarana, the concentration of plant-based caffeine is even higher than that of coffee beans. When these ingredients interweave and mix in the body, like creating a "chemical cocktail," the impact on the cardiovascular system is far greater than that of caffeine alone. In advertisements, energy drinks are often portrayed as the "battle robe" of young people. But since 2018, some supermarkets in the UK have banned the sale of energy drinks to teenagers under the age of 16, mainly due to concerns about obesity and tooth decay. And its potential threats to the heart and brain, such as increasing the risk of stroke, are often overlooked by us. This is particularly alarming for young people who already have a low risk of stroke. This uncle's experience is a negative example written with his body. It reminds people that true energy comes from a healthy lifestyle and diet, not from cups of sparkling "artificial stimulants". In the era of pursuing efficiency and excitement, perhaps we should learn the wisdom of continuous health preservation, rather than overdrawing our bodies. (New Society)
