Give the 'Little Electric Donkey' new national standard more time
2025-12-05
Entering December, with the complete discontinuation of the old national standard electric bicycles, discussions on the new national standard have suddenly heated up in the public opinion field, with topics labeled as "380 million people" and "travel pain points" trending on the hot search. The public concerns behind the controversy mainly focus on several aspects: firstly, whether the 25km/h "overspeed power-off" mechanism stipulated by the new national standard will trigger the risk of sudden braking; Secondly, rumors of "prohibiting electric bicycles from taking children" have gone viral, causing anxiety among many parents; Thirdly, the online rumor of "mandatory installation of metal saddles" clearly does not meet daily usage needs; Fourthly, 'prohibiting the installation of rearview mirrors' is more likely to increase safety hazards. Although authoritative departments and experts have refuted these rumors one by one, some people's doubts are difficult to completely dispel in the short term. From the perspective of public interest, improving the safety standards of electric bicycles is undoubtedly the trend. In recent years, traffic accidents caused by violations such as speeding, overweight, and modification of electric bicycles have become frequent, and safety hazards such as battery fires and vehicle loss of control have become increasingly prominent. The bloody lessons are still vivid in my memory, such as last year's Nanjing "2.23" fire accident, where the fire caused by the modification of an electric bicycle resulted in 15 deaths and 44 injuries. The new national standard has made significant improvements and advancements in vehicle quality, material flame retardancy, tamper proof design, intelligent monitoring, and enterprise access, which is undoubtedly a milestone in systematically addressing the safety pain points of electric bicycles. From the perspective of consumers, their core demand is not to oppose the increase in safety factor, but to worry about the decrease in convenience. For many consumers, electric bicycles are a "must-have tool" for daily commuting, grocery shopping, and picking up and dropping off children, and have long been deeply integrated into their lives. But in fact, the new national standard and convenience are not an either or opposition. Behind the controversy, there are issues of inadequate and inaccurate understanding of the new national standard, as well as some product models not being designed to meet demand in a timely manner, such as the absence of rear seats and rearview mirrors. As experts have said, 'The new national standard cannot be blamed for all the problems.'. The implementation of policies is never achieved overnight. Controversy not only reflects the balance between public safety and personal convenience, but also exposes the room for adjustment between policy implementation, industry transformation, and people's livelihood needs. In my opinion, the reason why some voices go to extremes is partly due to the significant gap between the usage habits formed by the "wild little electric donkey" for a long time and the "strictest" new national standard in history. From this perspective, the new national standard may seem like a "roadblock", but it is actually a "safety belt"; Seemingly a forward-looking norm that is detached from the masses, it is actually a "remedy for the long-standing chaos in the industry". Of course, how to maximize the satisfaction of people's livelihood needs while preventing risks and safeguarding the safety of the lives and property of the general public also tests the wisdom of policy implementation and industry innovation. Only by standardizing, designing, and regulating can we find the greatest common denominator between safety and convenience. Whether the new national standard is good or not should be judged by the general public, but rational discussions cannot be swayed by emotions, let alone by traffic. In recent years, issues related to electric bicycles have often become a "traffic code" for individual self media to stir up group conflicts and incite opposing emotions due to the large number of groups involved. This time, some deliberately fabricated information and images of "metal saddles" and "no children allowed" have amplified anxiety and deviated from the rhythm, not only misleading the public, but also obscuring truly valuable public discussions, such as how to ensure the maintenance of old cars and how to strengthen road rights management. The beginning of everything is difficult. The promotion of the new national standard is inevitably accompanied by the pains of industry transformation and the process of public adaptation. It may be better to give the new national standard more time and allow the new version of electric bicycles to be taken for a walk. (New Society)
