Recently, the Ministry of Science and Technology, together with relevant departments, deployed a special campaign to rectify academic misconduct and withdraw academic papers. This special rectification action focuses on Chinese scholars withdrawing papers from international journals in the field of natural sciences. Serious investigations and handling will be carried out for suspected plagiarism, fabrication of data or images, buying and selling of papers, and fabrication of peer review experts and opinions. In recent years, academic misconduct and retraction of academic papers have continued to attract public attention. In November of this year, the international journal Scientific Reports issued a retraction statement, stating that there was a "substantial overlap" between the paper of a researcher from a university in Lanzhou and two previously published results. In 2023, an international journal's retraction statement brought out the absurdity of a scratched steel ruler appearing in four different papers by Chinese scholars. The negative impact of not being able to retract a manuscript. Withdrawing academic papers due to academic misconduct not only damages academic seriousness and destroys the soil for innovation, but also lowers the international reputation of China's scientific community. The harm is obvious and the truth is self-evident, but why is it always difficult to eliminate the problem? At the end of the day, it's still utilitarian motives at play. From an individual perspective, some scholars engage in unethical behaviors such as tampering with experimental data to "ripen" achievements and "accelerate" progress. Overall, the assessment mechanism still focuses on short-term quantitative indicators, and the long-term goals of answering real questions and achieving real results are diluted. In addition, the grey industry chain such as paper writing has developed, and the impulse for profit is eroding the academic purity. The insufficient punishment also to some extent condones the occurrence of such behavior. In recent years, the government has made great efforts to rectify academic misconduct and weave a network of strict regulations. In 2024, the Ministry of Education issued the "Implementation Rules for Investigation and Handling of Academic Misconduct in Higher Education Institutions". In 2025, the newly revised Regulations of the National Natural Science Foundation of China will be implemented, making a series of new regulations on strengthening scientific research integrity and technological ethics construction. These regulations aim to serve as a warning and deterrent against academic misconduct. This special rectification action focuses on academic misconduct and withdrawal of academic papers, and further strengthens the foundation of academic integrity by clarifying punishment measures for dishonesty. What is even more worthy of praise is that the Ministry of Science and Technology will take the lead in promoting the establishment and improvement of a long-term governance mechanism for academic misconduct withdrawal of papers, and continue to carry out monitoring of withdrawal of papers. Scientific research is a journey towards the stars and the sea, full of unknowns, challenges, and infinite surprises. The stories of Yuan Longping, who devoted his life to the fields, Tu Youyou, who created artemisinin after hundreds of failures, and Nan Rendong, who used the "Chinese Eye" to communicate with the universe, all demonstrate that abandoning utilitarianism, focusing on real problems, and sitting on a cold bench can truly promote academic progress. We should cherish scholars who focus on research, gather consensus that they are willing to do practical things, and create a better supportive atmosphere for solving long-term problems. Only in this way can the road to becoming a technological powerhouse become more and more solid. (New Society)
