2025-12-04

Recently, the Shanghai Museum held the "From Fan to Beauty: Shanghai Museum's Collection of Fan Painting and Calligraphy Masterpieces" exhibition based on its collection of fan paintings and calligraphy masterpieces. The exhibition systematically reviewed the millennium development of Chinese fan painting and calligraphy art, showcasing its unique cultural connotations and aesthetic values, and attracting many visitors. The Shanghai Museum has a rich collection of fan paintings and calligraphy works, numbering in the thousands, ranging from the Northern Song Dynasty's extravagant fan paintings and calligraphy to modern folding fan paintings and calligraphy, spanning nearly a thousand years. The themes include landscapes, flowers and birds, figures, and calligraphy, with shapes including fan pages and finished fans. Based on this, this exhibition selects 100 representative works of famous artists from different periods of Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing, and modern times, aiming to present the artistic evolution and contemporary style of fan painting and calligraphy. The exhibition space of this exhibition is designed based on the characteristics of the main and auxiliary line exhibits and the artistic style of the times. The main exhibition focuses on the development of fan-shaped calligraphy and painting, integrating the aesthetic concepts of Song style architecture, Ming and Qing gardens, and literati study rooms into the spatial design. Through a spatial sequence from large to small and from outside to inside, a coherent exhibition flow is formed. The auxiliary line exhibits present the cultural connotations of fans in painting in the form of vertical axes, hand rolls, and other forms. The display design uses "bamboo" as a visual element to create an elegant atmosphere and highlight the literary spirit pursuit contained in fan culture. The main and auxiliary exhibition lines are interspersed and coordinated in the space, achieving a clever linkage between the interior and exterior scenes. The exhibition will be open to the public for free from November 14, 2025 and will continue until February 22, 2026. (New Society)
