Monash University scientists in Australia have developed a Band Aid style wearable patch that can monitor the activity of the fetus in the mother's body in real time, providing a new means for safer home pregnancy monitoring. The relevant research results were published in the latest issue of the journal "Scientific Advances". This lightweight patch has an area of approximately 10-14 square centimeters and can accurately monitor fetal movements such as rolling, stretching, and kicking. In a clinical trial involving 59 pregnant women, the accuracy of the device in recognizing these movements exceeded 90%. Fetal movement is an important signal reflecting the health status of the fetus, but there is still a lack of convenient and comfortable monitoring methods outside the hospital. At present, pregnant women often rely on self counting to perceive fetal movement at home, which can lead to uncertainty and may also increase psychological burden. The new flexible wearable devices are expected to change this situation, allowing pregnant women to wear them comfortably for a long time and continue non-invasive monitoring without affecting their daily lives. The advantage of the new device lies in the combination of flexible materials, intelligent signal processing, and AI technology. The different movements of the fetus will form different patterns on the surface of the mother's abdomen, captured by two sensors on the device, and then recognized by a machine learning system at the time of fetal movement. This fusion design enables the system to automatically capture more comprehensive fetal activity information than existing wearable solutions while maintaining lightweight comfort. The team emphasizes that this technology is not a replacement for clinical evaluation, but a supplement to standard care that can assist in early intervention when fetal movement patterns change.
