Red adzuki beans, also known as red beans or adzuki beans, are a popular miscellaneous grain on the dining tables of Chinese people, but scientists' understanding of their genome is not yet deep enough. Recently, the innovation team of the Institute of Crop Science, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, for the exploration and innovative utilization of excellent germplasm resources of characteristic crops, drew a high-quality reference genome map of cultivated red beans in China, and constructed a "one-stop" precision breeding platform for red beans that integrates data and analysis. The related research results were recently published in the international academic journal "Advanced Science". Red beans, as an important traditional edible legume crop in China, have high nutritional value and the ability to fix nitrogen and improve soil. However, the lack of high-quality genomic resources seriously restricts the research process of genetic improvement of adzuki beans, resulting in long breeding cycles and low breeding efficiency. To this end, the research team assembled a high-quality reference genome of the red bean cultivar "Zhonghong 20" and conducted population genetic analysis on 546 red bean germplasm resources, constructing a comprehensive genetic variation map and identifying a group of key genes that can participate in controlling important agronomic traits such as yield, seed shape, seed coat color, and flowering time. On this basis, the research team also built the AdzukiBeanAtlas comprehensive breeding data platform for adzuki beans, and used this platform to select an improved strain "Zhonghong 213" with significantly improved yield. The relevant person in charge of the research team stated that the above study provides an important theoretical basis and platform support for the functional genomics research and precision design breeding of adzuki beans.
