Sowing the seeds of technology in the fertile fields of Jianghuai - the path of poverty alleviation and development for teachers and students of Anhui Agricultural University

In early winter, the plain of northern Anhui is shrouded in a thin mist like gauze. The seeder equipped with the Beidou navigation system drove through the fields, leaving neat tracks and accurately sowing winter wheat seeds into the soil. Not far away, Lu Jie, a wheat breeding expert at Anhui Agricultural University, crouched by the edge of the field, twisting a handful of soil with his fingertips and rubbing it carefully. The soil moisture is just right, hurry up and plant in these two days, "he said to the grain growers beside him." Look at the sky and the seedlings, promote weak and control strong, and improve the quality of the group. "This technologically advanced sowing scene on the northern plain of Anhui seems to be separated from the poverty scene in the Dabie Mountains of western Anhui 40 years ago by a time gap. For the past 40 years, generations of teachers and students at Anhui Agricultural University have forged a practical path of poverty alleviation through technology with their feet, sowing the seeds of technology in the fertile fields of Jianghuai. Jinzhai is a revolutionary old area with inconvenient transportation and insufficient food supply. The people are really suffering... "recalled Shen Hexiang, the then dean of Anhui Agricultural University (predecessor of Anhui Agricultural University). In 1985, Anhui Agricultural University partnered with Jinzhai County in Anhui Province to establish the first school local cooperative agricultural specialty class in China, laying the foundation for poverty alleviation through science and education. No classroom? Find an abandoned warehouse, clean it up, set up tables and chairs, and that's the classroom; No laboratory? The fields are the best research grounds. Teachers and students carried boxes filled with specimens and stacks of technical materials, and ran across mountains and valleys towards the village. The mountain road is difficult to walk on, and it is common for shoes to wear out; At night without lights, I lit kerosene lamps to organize data and teach farmers techniques. The first vocational class opened two majors, forestry and sericulture, and recruited 67 students. These students follow the farmers to cultivate the fields during the day, bending over to weed and reaching out to plant seedlings, without any ambiguity; At night, under the kerosene lamp, they sort out their practical experience from the day while writing down-to-earth textbooks - what they want is not just "talk on paper", but knowledge that farmers can use. This persistence lasted for 13 years, and 565 local talents who could be retained and used came out of this "warehouse classroom" and scattered to every corner of the Dabie Mountains, sowing more seeds of wisdom. Professor Wan Zhihu led his team to root in Jinzhai for 40 years, cultivating the traditional Chinese medicine industry into a pillar industry in the Dabie Mountains; Professor Hu Chenglin has been deeply involved in the fields for many years and is affectionately known as the "Professor Mud Legs" by the masses, creating the "Anhui Model" for high-yield grain production... The teachers and students of Anhui Agricultural University are committed to this poverty alleviation and development path that is based on mountainous resources, market guidance, technology as the pillar, and intelligence as the core. In the past, people walked into the mountains with shovel on their shoulders. Today, unmanned aerial vehicles patrol the fields along the Beidou route. The Internet of Things equipment has organized an integrated monitoring network of "sky, air and earth". At the Wanbei Comprehensive Experimental Station, small meteorological stations, soil sensors, and insect monitoring lights work together to transmit data in real-time. A multispectral drone scan reveals which areas are lacking in fertilizer and where pests are growing, making it clear at a glance. ”Liu Lichao, a teacher from the School of Engineering at Anhui Agricultural University, held up his phone and saw a clear map of farmland on the screen. Strawberry growers in Changfeng County have also truly tasted the "sweetness" of technology. The locally grown 'Hongyan' strawberries, which have been grown for 40 years, have gradually experienced a decline in variety - the fruit has become smaller and the taste has deteriorated. The An Nong University team has targeted research and development, promoted virus-free seedlings, introduced high-quality new varieties, and optimized planting techniques. After two years of hard work, the yield of strawberries per mu has increased by 15%, driving local farmers to increase their income by 14 million yuan. The key to this path being able to continue for 40 years is to achieve a positive interaction between education and serving the economy and society. ”The principal of the school, Cao Haiqun, listed a set of data to reporters: more than 65% of graduates actively choose to work and start businesses at the grassroots level, and have trained a total of 42000 "rural college students"; 58 national level new varieties of wheat, rice, corn and 194 provincial-level new varieties have been selected and bred, integrating 44 provincial-level key technologies and promoting the application of more than 1200 "four new" technologies, serving and driving more than 2000 new business entities. Nowadays, the school's service tentacles have spread throughout Jianghuai. We will steadfastly continue on this path, which is a path independently explored by the school to promote the integration of education, technology, and talent, "Zhang Qingliang, the secretary of the school's party committee, told reporters.
